Wikipedia Moves to Ubuntu
"In a few months, Wikipedia will finish a major transformation by moving from a combination of versions of Red Hat products to Ubuntu Linux Version 8.04 on all 400 of its servers that support the Web site. The move to all-Ubuntu was primarily done with the goal of 'making our own administration and maintenance simpler,' [Brion Vibber] said. 'We decided that we want to standardize on something.'"

Do I need a new OS when I purchase a new Mobo?
"I'm having a Friend build my system for me and I was just curious if the hard drive I have now with windows XP will just plug into the new Mobo and work like that or if I will need to get a new HD and install a new OS on it. (I was kind of looking for a reason to get Vista 64 anyways) I was also going to use my CD/DVD Drives from my old system as well instead of purchasing new ones. Will those just plug and play with my new Mobo or will I need to find the CDs that they came with from years ago?"

Theres actually no phone line, and only a coax (where the modem connects in from now) in one spot on the first floor in the house. I've seen devices for transmitting ethernet over powerlines... also ones for transmitting ethernet over coax.... What I wan't to know is there something for transmitting ethernet (for internet) and coax (for the tv) over the powerlines..."

How to show buffer progress on scrubline of FLVPLayback?
"OK we've all seen the scrubline on YouTube, Google and other sites where you can see on the scrubline the progress of the buffer as well as the playhead position. Anyone have any clues how to do this? Obviously this is not a feature apparently available with the FLVPlayback component itself."

Jetman Flies Across the English Channel
"After two weather-related delays, Swiss pilot Yves Rossy, aka the Jet Man, is slated to attempt to rocket into the history books Friday by becoming the first person to fly across the English Channel using a single, jet-propelled wing attached to his back. On live television, Rossy will jump from a plane about 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) above Calais, France, unfold his wing, fire up the jets, and attempt to cross the 20 miles (32 kilometers) over water to Dover, England The machine should propel him at about 118 miles (190 kilometers) an hour, making it a 12- to 15-minute trip."

Degradable Code and Unobtrusive Javascript
"I've been building a template and I'm using a lot of AJAX and other sexy JS stuff. While working through degradable aspects of the code I wondered if it is really worth the effort. I know this argument isn't new, and I'm all-for degradable code and unobtrusive JS, but should it be a commercial decision else are websites that do not conform just 'badly coded' ?"

Featured Tutorial: Multi-Column Layout Using CSS Float
For this tutorial, we're targeting a layout that has three columns of content with spaces at the top and bottom for a header and footer. The page will be a fixed width and will also be centered in the browser's display area (the figure to your left).
We'll begin with an XHTML page structure in its most simple form. In the <head> of our document, we'll point to an external CSS file.
Once upon a time, web developers used the HTML element <table> to layout content columns. This practice is now recognized as cumbersome and not very semantic.
These days, instead of using <table>, we use the <div> element as a container for content. Once you get the hang of it, using <div> becomes very liberating and greatly reduces the amount of markup needed to layout a page.
This is an intermediate level tutorial that discusses one method of multi-column page layout. It assumes the reader has a good knowledge and understanding of HTML and CSS.
