You do need to ensure that the box for contacts is ticked on your iTunes for it to carry it across. I'm sure you have sorted it now though.

You can follow below to see how to transfer contacts from iPhone to Mac using iTunes. This allows you to keep all your iPhone contact information on Mac. To do this, you could follow the steps below:
1. Connect your iPhone to Mac and launch iTunes on Mac.
2. When your device appears in the iTunes window (below Devices), select it.
3. Click the Info button and select "Sync Address Book Contacts".

You can backup iPhone contacts with iCloud. Go to "Settings">"iCloud" and log in your Apple id. Once it is done, Toggle the "Contacts" slider ON. It will be green when enabled. This will automatically back up all of your iPhone contacts from your Contacts app to your iCloud storage.

iTunes is really a good tool for us to transfer iPhone data to pc/Mac. If you want to transfer contacts from iPhone to computer/Mac, follow the following steps:
1. From the Home screen, select Settings.
2. Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars and then scroll down and press Import SIM contacts. This will copy any phone numbers stored on the SIM to the memory of the iPhone.
3. Now connect your iPhone to your PC using a USB cable. If iTunes doesn't automatically open, press Start and select the program from the list.
4. Once iTunes has opened, press the iPhone icon that appears on the left-hand side of the iTunes window.
5. From the options displayed, click Info And then tick the box next to Sync Address Book and Contacts.
6. Now press Sync at the bottom of the screen and all your iPhone contacts will be copied to your PC.
