There is something lurking in the registry that the install is seeing. First look in Add and Remove programs in the control panel. If there is nothing there, search the registry.

No one said you were stupid. I didn't assume it either. The idea is to cover all possibilities. As I said, if it's nowhere to be found, you have to search the registry. That's where it's hiding. Since your not stupid, I'm sure you know how to do that already, so I won't explain it.

I won't tell you to look at msconfig either.

LOL chill out man i didnt accuse u of anything, all i meant is that although i have no understanding in computers (at all!), i still knew to look in the add/remove programs.

so if u could just please explain me what i should do, step by step if possible that would be great.

and thanx for helping too.

Ok, no problem. It get's a little complicated but let's give it a shot.

If the install sees another version, it's seeing it in the registry. That's the heart of the operating system. There are three files that you have to search for and delete in order to start fresh.

Msn.exe Msn6.exe Msnsusii.exe

Msn.exe is the executable for MSN Explorer, Msnusii.exe is the executable for the MSN Installer Wizard, and Msn6.exe is a previous version of the software and exists only on computers on which an upgrade (not a clean installation) was performed.

To search the registry, click start, run, type regedit and press enter. The registry will open. Click edit and find.
Enter the first file name and press enter. If it finds the file, right click on it and left click on delete. Hit F3 to continue the search and delete all entries. Continue doing that until it says Finished searching registry.

The do the same with the next 2 files. That should do it. You can delete entire folders with MSN on them if necessary. Then when you do the install, it should work.

I wouldn't format a PC for something like that. Open the registry again and search for msn instead of the complete file names.

That sure is strange. Look at the event viewer for errors.

Did you by chance install MSN Live 9 Beta? If you did, go to start->run and type msiexec /x {B1403D7D-C725-4858-AACC-7E5FA2D72859}

That should uninstall it and let you install the current stable version.

If you have other Live Beta softwares and wish to uninstall try these:

To UnInstall Windows Live Mail Beta
msiexec /x {DFD6935E-D94A-4DBE-AD8F-E37CBC6B577F}

To UnInstall Windows Live Toolbar Beta
msiexec /x {5524A0D4-F826-4961-9B53-EFF6C615251B}

To UnInstall Windows Live Writer Beta
msiexec /x {AC5568AB-C3E3-490E-BE40-50977C12288D}

To Uninstall Windows Live Photo Gallery Beta
msiexec /x {F6D0986F-D9A8-479B-A80F-61D53CDF65BA}

To Uninstall Windows Live Family Safety Beta

I dont know what version is installed, i bought a new laptop and when tried to install msn it said i have a newer version already.

i tried the msn 7.5, tried the live 9 beta, and the latest windows live messenger.

i tried to uninstall with your suggestion but it wont finish it and it says something about a network error.

i tried msn's technical support too but even they couldnt help me, this is kinda amazing really.
