I would suggest you change your directory up to c:\ and try it. I have had some commands not work at the user directory level.
Type "cd.." hit enter repeat until you are at the c:\prompt.
Type "cd.." hit enter repeat until you are at the c:\prompt.

I'm sure the boot disc fix works, but often if one file is corrupt or missing, there may be others and the root cause is still present. In other words, if you replace one file you may boot to find another message about additional files missing/corrupt. I really don't understand manufacturers not inc...

I think setting a bios password is a fairly good way to secure a computer. It is possible to retrieve the password, but for a casual trespasser, it would be a good deterrent.
