I would greatly appreciate answers to these questions about the Handshake theme by Hugo:

1. How do you display the slider on the Home Page (home page template)?

2. How do you customize the page that is displayed when you type in the url for our wordpress site?

3. What is the name of the page from question #2?

Thank you very much!

Hi Patricia!

The slider is done via Javascript using the jQuery library. I believe it is actually using the JJ NextGen JQuery Slider module which you can freely obtain with any WordPress website. So in the WP admin area you can configure that in the widgets area.

If you want to further customize the template, then it would require you to edit the theme files which would be located in the wp-content/themes folder. You can also edit these files directly in the WP admin area by going to Appearance and then Editor. To customize those files you will likely need to understand HTML, CSS, PHP, and how WordPress works in general. If you are finding it difficult to customize, you can always have us customize it further at an additional charge, or you can hire a local programmer or freelancer.

The main page that is shown when going to a WordPress site is usually handled via index.php in the theme folder for the specific theme that is installed.

Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for your prompt reply!

I guess what confused me is that the demo of the Handshake theme showed the main page and the home page with identical content. If you click on the home page (Home menu item on the demo), the main page content is rendered. This led me to conclude that the pages should be the same. However, based upon your response, it would appear that the theme files in the demo differ from those that I purchased.

If I want the main page (content from index.php) to render identically to the home page (content from the home page template), I would need to activate the JJ NextGen JQuery Slider module. I would also need to include the slider in the home page template, which I can edit from the WordPress admin interface (Appearance->Editor).

Is this correct?

Again, thanks so much for your help.
Best regards,
Patricia

When I goto the demo by default you see the home page. When I click on any other links and then click on the "Home" link I go back to the default page for when you first went to the demo. Are you seeing some sort of different behavior? Is it taking you to a different link when you click on "Home"? For me the links are identical in the browser window, I am thinking you are seeing two separate pages for some reason.

Do you have this live on your website somewhere where I can see how it is behaving?

Yes, I am seeing the same thing you are seeing, which is good!

I guess I concluded, based on your response, that I would be seeing two different pages since the slider is not included in the home page template. As you saw, the slider shows up on both the default page for the site, and the home page.

On my site, I am only seeing the slider on the default page, but not on the home page. I really want the two pages to look identical, but it appears (based on your response) that I would need to customize the home page template in order to do this. Is this correct?

Thanks and best regards,
Patrica

Hi Patricia,

Hmm, do you happen to remember if you installed the SQL dump file that came with the template? Typically most of our template will require you to also install that to get it to the state that you see in the demo.

Perhaps that is the problem? I will check with my colleague and see if he installed the SQL dump file that came with the template.

Again, thanks for your help!

Earlier we had unzipped template_36749_UfFMxEG3W9N094ufgmWF.zip, created theme1402.zip by zipping the theme1402 folder and uploaded it.

Based on your feedback, we used Fantastico Deluxe to set up a new Wordpress installation and uploaded template_36749_UfFMxEG3W9N094ufgmWF.zip on our domain host. It took a long time, but installed successfully, though it came back with three warnings all of which had to do with a file called functions.php. We cannot tell whether that is a problem.

We are still not sure that the MySQL database was uploaded. You have mentioned that it needs to be uploaded. Any way to check that our installation and uploaded theme is are in good order?

Again, thanks for your help!
Best regards,
Patricia

Hi Patricia,

It sounds like you did most of the instructions correctly. The only part you are missing is extracting the SQL dump file from the sources zip file in your template package and then running that SQL file in phpMyAdmin.

What were the exact errors returned that were related to functions.php?

What version of WordPress are you using?

Can I ask you when you purchased this template from our website? I am having problems locating your order. Can you forward your template download e-mail to me?

One of my colleagues purchased the theme earlier this month, and unfortunately I don't have the order number with me. But I do appreciate all your help.

Thanks,
Patricia

Just wanted to let you know that I was able to import the .sql file provided with the theme successfully, along with the plugins. After completing these last steps, my WordPress installation looked just like the demo.

Again, thank you for all of your help! Your diagnosis of my problem was absolutely correct.
Best regards,
Patricia
