The tutorial you linked to seems to a great job informing you of the steps required to do this. I really wouldn't know how to describe it better.

Is there anything in particular you are having issues with?

Typically that emboss look is created by something called a "bevel" or "fillet" in a 3D program. They all work slightly differently but usually you need to select the edge (not the face) and apply the fillet to that object. It's been quite a while since I used Max but I believe it may be an option in the extrude process.
If at first you don't succeed F1... If that doesn't work try Google!

I can't help you with the effect but I can recommend you for learning getting some decent books. 3D Studio Max is really advanced software. I was using it long long time ago and I almost forgot everything but when I was starting with it (it was Max R2 version) I've been learning from books and the official handbook. For example Photoshop is much easier to learn and after you get basic knowledge you may learn it simply by practice and following various tutorials.

Most people that are new to 3dsmax are frustrated too easily;

If you take the time to learn how the program works, then you can usually figure something simple out quite quickly. Create > Modify !
