Big Garter Snake

I found this in my backyard behind a compost pile.
The second photo is a few seconds before he striked at me, but luckily that black ziptie was in the way and he got a mouthful of plastic! It was larger then most garter snakes I've seen (I'd say a good two feet). This next image might help explain the size:
