Complex Multi-Photo Collage

Okay, I'm trying to make a collage with about 500+ pictures, but I would like to make a grid of them and have a picture behind them, using the 500+ pictures to draw with the contours of all background image...i.e. white pictures will fill a white portion of the main photo. I was wondering how to do this since I have no idea what its called or where to start.
I would like to provide an example but I don't know what it is called.
