I'm a children's book illustrator looking for a computer drawing program to create rough draft drawings/color. Any suggestions on a user-friendly program? Also, what drawing pen/pad might work best for this purpose ?
Thanks, Leah

Adobe Illustrator is going to be an excellent choice for you to create your own drawings in. It is fairly easy to use, although taking a proper course in it would be really helpful as there are so many features would use that you wouldnt know at first were there.

As for the drawing pen/pad side of things, I started a topic here when I bought my first one. You will get lots of info here:

illustrator is good, but for real artwork type drawing, such as childrens books and print material, adobe photoshop might be mroe familiar for you. learning illustrator takes a lot of practice and effort as it uses a completely different kind of image calculation called vector imaging. it's basically all mathematical calculations to produce an image. adobe photoshop is going to give you the more natural artistic feel you're used to with your everyday drawing tools.

as far as pen/pad's to use. go with wacom. they are highly supported, especially with adobe products. depending on your need for features and professional quality you can choose from a variety or styles. check out http://www.wacom.com and you can actual take a little quiz to see which one is right for you.

best of luck, and feel free to inquire further.
