So, figured I'd have a lil play around... Yup, I know it's a lil dark, I didn't realise I had a -3 exposure compensation level set when I took the shot, hehe.

You can see a slightly larger (800x600) version here.

I'll snap a few more during the day and see what I can come up with :)

Well, she didn't complain ;)

I don't know, that was a worry when I first started shooting photos of the snakes - especially as snakes don't have eyelids, and even more especially in this case as she's albino (has no melanin - black colour pigment - and so long-term super bright light exposure can actually be damaging - so it's theorised)...

But she doesn't seem to have suffered any ill effects. She went back to snoozing after I put her back in her cage. Now, when I go back over to my friend Jeremy's and shoot some pics of his 8ft female king cobra (who's nutty as a fruitcake anyway), if the flash pisses her off, I'm sure she'll let us know about it :)

NICE!!! Did you touch this up, or were you able to create the depth of field thing with just the camera?

...and

What kind of snake is that. It's colorings are beautiful. Good subject for photo testing, I think. To quote Steve Irwin, "Crikey! Aren't you a gorgeous lil beauty?"

The only touching up I did was to auto-levels (like I said, accidentally did a -3 exposure comp), resize (to 800x600), and an unsharp mask or two. Then the gallery script I uploaded it to shelled to ImageMagick and resized it again to a 600 width to comply with the rules here :)

Other than that, no other manips at all. DoF is entirely in the camera (f/5.6 btw)

Oh yeah, Nikon's great.. but I'll let you in on a secret, that photo was taken at the D100's lowest resolution, in "medium" quality JPG, heh.

You just wait'll I get that 4Gig Lexar CompactFlash and have room for high-quality 6.1MBit uncompressed TIFs :)

I was just going to ask about the tifs. OK -- I want one too! *lmao My old Minolta SLR doesn't cut the mustard in today's modern world.

Just for a comparison (and to show how good Photoshop's auto-levels is, lol), this is a crop of part of the original that I had to work with - totally non-manipulated other than the crop.

Oops, sorry dM, didn't see you ask what it was... she's an Amelanistic Corn Snake (AKA Albino corn snake).

Man, I just spent the last 30 mins tryin' to get back on here... for some reason, when I rebooted, it reverted to giving me the old IP. I just logged into one of my dedicated servers, did the dig thing, and then edited my hosts file.. Must be a Comcast thing, my Linux box here is showing the old IP too.

And here's a full size top quality crop (the full image is 3000x2000 pixels)...

Image

I know I can get better focus than that, and it's only a $75 lens (Nikon 28-80 f/3.3-5.6 AF G), so I can't expect too much yet...

Eventually I'll get a couple of the D lenses.. the following are the next 3 lenses I wanna buy (in order of want, most important first, heh)

Nikon 70-300mm AF D Lens (about 300 bucks)
Nikon 105mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor (about 400 bucks)
Phoenix 650-1300mm super-telephoto (about $300. It's a way way cheap lens for what it does, but it does produce some pretty half-decent images).
