My son downloaded Gimp and I can't figure it out. All I want to do is remove the background. I can use the tool to trace the image, but can't get any farther. What do I do next?

Yay for you downloading the GIMP!

Assuming you've successfully made the selection - press Crtl-I (or do Select->Invert), then press Crtl-K (or do Edit->Clear) to clear the background.

Good luck!
