Practice, Experiment, Learn.

Also google search for tutorials so you can learn techniques and adapt them to your own work.

At first you will probably be a filterholic like most Photoshoppers are in the beginning (including myself), but over time you will find and refine your own style and your pieces will be more than just filters.

congrats! great purchase, you won't be dissappointed.

I think what lostinbeta suggests is definitely the best way to learn.
Just try some stuff out and you'll pickup quickly what works for you
and what doesn't.

and I also agree, google is your friend ;)

The first 4 were chock full of filters, no real goal, just random filters, random words, random placement

The second 4 were thought out, I replaced most filters with regular tools like the dodge and burn tools, the smudge tool, etc, etc (you will figure them out as you go along). I was able to harness the concepts of layer styles and blend modes to replace filters as well.

This all came with my own personal experimentation with the tools of Photoshop, and following photoshop tutorials just to get down techniques and not always going for the particular look the tutorial was for.

Which glowing effect?

It was most likely acheived through playing with layer styles, but I don't know which one you are talking about :?

Oh, hehe, that's all just gaussian blur (Filter/Blur/Gaussian Blur).

Pretty much that is all that image is. Some brush strokes with Gaussian Blur, some lines, and some fonts.

Just kinda happened with the guassian blur (although I might have used some layer blend modes, which are in a drop down in the layers panel)

I was a gaussian blur fiend when I started...

Still am kinda, gaussian blur is a very useful filter.
