It almost sounds to me as if your asking for what's calld a "blinds" effect. Try this Google search and see if you find anything there that helps. (I may have interpreted what you want wrong, not sure)

ok... that search didnt really got me anywhere...
it only takes me to payed applet anouncments...

Actually what i am looking for is the search words to insert on google...

"blinds effect" doesnt make it... i tryed "php stretching images" and i am getting somewhere... there should be some more specific words to get there...

I'm not sure what you're trying to do. Any examples?

I just did a brief tutorial on flash transitions for the flash competition. Try taking a look at these. http://www.atnoproductions.com/ozzu/com ... /atno.html

After reading your post a couple of times, I'm pretty sure the squeeze transition is what you're trying to accomplish.

mmmm no.... i mean something very basic... like...

on ozzu skin the grey horizntal bar on a message view that say author.... the background has a bit of 3d efect...

or when u press "post reply" u get to the message editor.... the bar where it says "post a reply"... it has some 3d.

my querstion is: how do i get a variabe width horizontal bar like that using a small image that should either loops or strech?

Assign the image as the background of your div or table cell and make it repeat horizontally.

Yep. That's it. All that is is a simple very small image set as repeating background.

Essentially all that is is a gradient 8 pixels wide by 38 pixels high.
