Hi,

I am a website designer and administrator of a website hosting company. I am also very interested in photography. I love the idea of online photo contests and want to start a website dedicated to just that. Heres what I am thinking for the website:

- Weekly and/or monthly contests
- Small cash prizes of $5, $10 and $20.
- Voting by members/other photographers and an Admin Selection
- Possibility of asking photographers that enter to pay $.50 or $1 per entry to help raise funds for the prizes

What do you think?
Is this something that you (as a photographer) would be interested in?

Also, if I get some decent support i would like a partner or two to help me get this off the ground.

All input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

it sounds like a good idea, have you checked to see if anyone else is doing something similar already?

It does sound like a good idea, and probably good for amateur photographers just wanting to share their pics.

To be honest though, you're probably going to have to spend quit a bit on attorney fees to work up the TOS, etc. Photography can be a very very precarious issue when it comes to copyright and ownership of images (even if you hire a photography to shoot your wedding, you may get a copy of the prints, but the photographer still owns them).

I don't know if many people would pay to enter, I know pro photographers wouldn't. It's just not worth it for them. They could pick up several thousand dollars on the sale of a single photo (and many do).

But, again for amateur photographers, I think the site could work. I probably wouldn't charge people to enter though, it's just going to put people off, and if you charged them $0.50, assuming PayPal, you're only gonna end up with $0.10-0.20 after the fees have been taken.

Your best bet would be to make revenue from advertising, or sponsorship.

I've done some preliminary research and their are existing sites in the category such as digitalphotocontest.com or picture.com however I know that most photo forums still have one of their own and i was hopeing to mainly target that audience. With a partner or two I would still like to take the project on.

Would you guys be interested?

Axe, I thought about what you said and your right about the paypal fees. Relying on advertising and sponsors is probably a better way to make some money for prizes, i am willing to make some initial investment as well as nessecary but i hope eventually it will be primarily self sustaining and maybe if i get lucky it will bring a little extra profit.

What do you think?

It sounds great to me. A few questions:

Are you planning to have it set up as a forum type website, or is it going to be different.

If its going to be forums, I would suggest having mods who are not only good with the web and who will dedicate their time to it, but also who have a special interest in art.

A good off-shoot would be to have a special forum where people can just post "art-in-progress" and have it reviewed by other people and or mods.

Also, do you have any backing yet? I suppose that its too early, but I can suggest a few people, mainly people here on Ozzu.

Maybe speak with Bigweb and see what he can help you with.

Your idea sounds great, and I hope it works out for you. Ill continue to watch this topic, so please keep us updated on how its going. :)

Me too actually, but considering how much my work demands of me I dont know how much time I would be able to put forth. My web design skills are quite limited, but my PS and pencil drawing is fairly top-notch. ;)

Hey,

Glad to hear to there's interest. I'm not sure if it should be forum based or more gallery based. I think we might want to get a gallery script that allows voting on pictures by members or something to that affect. That will allow us to better keep track of the voting etc... Although, a forum maybe be slightly easier to setup. What do you think?

I think our first step is deciding on a name (with an available .com). I can get the .com when we decide and I'll host on at my hosting company so that's not a problem. Any suggestions for a name?

Regarding backing, no not really, but of course I would love to get some to help get this off the ground.

I look forward to moving forward. Thanks for the input and agreeing to help out.

well i think both ways would not be too hard. and i think we should have both the image gallery voting system and a forum. I'm looking over some of the image voting systems on hotscripts. looks like there's a bunch we could use.

I think your right, a combination of the two is probably the way to go. A gallery for voting and viewing photos, but definately a forum to for chatting, etc...

You have any idea's for the name?

(sometimes i think thats the hardest part)

Yeah, I just looked through those and there seem to be a lot of good options. Just an idea, for the gallery I would set somthing up like this:

http://www.sonsofthestorm.com/gallery_samwise.html

And then when the image is clicked on, it allows comments below it. Like this:

BIG PIC HERE

-OMG! I love this pic

-Kinda suck........................

-Keep up the good work!
