Masks

Ah! for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to do a mask! I don't even know if a mask is the right thing that I'm trying to figure out. Ok, what I need is to have the outline of an image or shape, whatever, cut out from the background pic. Oh that was the worst way of explaining it, but if anyone can help with my little mask issue, then I very much appreciate it. :)

also, I am trying to figure out fading out of pictures.. like gradual fading into the background.
