one thing I can say that bothers me is that there is not one thing that is overlapping another and it makes the poster seem empty ...

Empty poster like righteous_trespasser pointed out.
Not much going on on the poster.
Look at some examples of horror move posters
Meaning of colors as well
Some horror-Dos and Horror-Don'ts

Hope that some of that helped.

Yeah, there is not alot happening here. You need to put more into it, try and sort of minimise the black but still have the odd black bit showing. You need more images and maybe play about with the layer styles to the text.

I don't have Photoshop here, but if my memory serves right you go to Layer>Layer tools>then pick layer options or something like that. It should have various tabs. Maybe play about with shadows (but don't go OTT) or even just a thin 1px sized stroke with a colour that doesn't differ too much from the text colour.

Just play about with the tools you don't normally look at, you'll learn quick enough and soon enough you'll get a goodish effect.

Good luck!

I like it a lot more, but it still feels to me like the objects were just loosely placed on the black background ... have a look at this. I'm really not trying to be harsh or anything like that, just giving you my opinion ...

Good one.. that poster has a much more believable light source.

Notice how the person's silhouette is dark, with light glowing from behind it? That might be the way to go for your poster instead of having the silhouette's be white on a black background. Just an idea..
