The most popular site that i am aware of that could work for you is Deviantart. You can submit your work there then allow people the opportunity to buy it from you.

Check them out, www.deviantart.com

Anything that i have submitted to Deviantart in the past has always been jpg. I don't actually often submit graphics, it's mostly photographs.

If it is digital Art paintings then i'd choose jpg rather than any other format.

Sometimes its easier to sell art if its attached to something useful. You could try selling tshirts/coffee mugs and bags, etc from a cafe press store.

Try the big stock photo places. Lots of them offer abstract art for resale. You probably wouldn't want to put your whole portfolio up, but having a couple of items available might generate some spare change.
