That would KILL on server resources

The image creation functions are beyond cool, but in most cases are waaaay un-practical

Now if you had a script run once a day that created/saved a bunch of images as files & just directed to the pre-made images randomly it wouldn't be as deadly on resources :D

I do a lot of dynamic image/flash manipulation with php, but I wouldn't exactly call it art.

For instance, my main site deals with maps for the game Everquest. The maps are basically flat text files with point and line locations in them. I wrote a parser that will generate png images of the maps whenever a user uploads a new one. I'm also adding a new feature to allow users to dynamically change the POIs (Points Of Interest) on the map here:
http://www.kgreene.com/show.php (note: May not work in gecko based browsers or opera, it's still in development)

For dynamic flash stuff, I LOVE Ming. I did a few dynamic charts for my City of Heroes guild here:
http://www.darkavengers.org/arch_chart.php
and here:
http://www.darkavengers.org/orig_chart.php

I've done a LOT of image manipulation with php, and have gotten quite good at it, if I do say so :)

Actually, if the image is simple enough, it's not hard on the server at all. At one point, I had a pathfinding script on my site, where you could select a start zone and an end zone and the server would plot the 3 shortest paths (if there were 3). All I did was use the pregenerated map images, and plot a simple path over the top of them. Even with several hundred people using it, it would barely make a dent in the server performance.
The GD library is pretty damn well optimized.

What DID make a serious dent was my pathfinding algo. Originally, it would display ALL paths to the destination, and for some queries, there were as many as 70 distinct paths! (That's why I ultimately limited it to the 3 shortest)

Anyway that feature has been removed from my site, but not because it was putting too much of a load on the server, but because I didn't maintain the zone connections and atrophy set in. I plan on adding it back in at some point, after some other, more important features.
