I enjoy doing things different by: taking the time to think (5 T's)

Placing Text - upon text in a creative manner resulted in this very kewl looking logo.

First make the text name in photoshop with glow or drop shadow and colors.

Then in 3d studio max create the 3D text and place the *.jpg as a map onto the text in max.

Add some special effects and 'bingo'

Curious how you did the special effects with the fiery glow and smoke at the top. Did you do that part after you rendered it in 3D Studio Max in Photoshop? Or did you use a particle system of some sorts in 3D Studio Max?

Fire & Smoke are easily done in 3D Studio max but... you need a gizmo first. Create the gizmo around the objects. I usually use a hemisphere and then squash it somewhat. then go to the top menu Rendering > effects > add > fire smoke. Adjust the paramaters as necessary.

It required one rendering !

3ds max is without any doubt my very most favorite program to play in and exercise my imagination.

My avatar was creating using one cube (body & face), 2 speheres,(eyes) a circle (fur ruff) and an elipse.(fur at bottom of parky) 2 cylinders for the boots.

Thanks for the explanation, pretty cool with the avatar. I have played around with 3D Studio Max a bit with the trial software. Was really fun to use, but by no means much more than a newbie with it. I wouldn't mind adding it to my arsenal of software, but I just cannot justify almost 4k for it and then paying a couple thousand to upgrade each time. At least right now I can't. If I ever got into game making or creating models and reselling those it might pay for itself :)
