Im betting he just layed in the colors on a seperate layer, maybe even an image of real flames, and then blurred them out. I just finished trying it and it works fairly well, but doesnt look quite as good as his.

dude i dont think you should push the topic of a tutorial that hard if you wish to get a tutorial, its just gets annoying after a while. simply do some "other" photoshop tutorials and you will figure out how to do it.

go to good-tutorial.com and search flames , blending, effects, ect... you will find things to help you there.

Tutorials can sometimes be the worst and/or best way to learn IMHO. Sometimes you just don't retain anything, or you use an overused tutorial that makes way to...well...overused works. Othertimes they help you learn a lot :-P

yeah, its not the tutorial its the way you use the tutorial, what tutorials are suppose to be made for are to show you a way to make/achieve something, then what you should do is add your own flavour to that, or just take the tutorial your own way, also learn what you can from the method used and then use them in other jobs.

When I was learning how to manipulate photoshop, I learned it as I went. When you want to know somthing, you fiddle with it until you get what you want. To me, thats the best way to learn. If I teach myself, I always seem to remmember it better than if I used a tutorial.
