Do you have an example file? Are you just saying "masked" or is it really done with a mask?

Sounds like the mode is still Indexed colour. Go on the layer that is in red and then at the top of the menu Image > Mode > RGB or CMYK (whatever your needing).

it is either that, or masks normally appear as pink to show you what it is you are editing, and giving you something to select (if it is the transparent pink).

yeah it often does that for example say you open an image and you want to put text on it you click your text tool and onto the image and it turns red, so you change the mode of the image and it works fine.

Also, don't know how this would effect the particular photo you have but try hitting new layer and make the layer BLACK, then on the drop down menu above the layers pick Soft Light. You can also adjust it even more by the % right next to that..

~or~

Go to IMAGE - ADJUST - HUE/SATURATION and mess around with the colors there.. The bottom one should adjust the black and white factor..

actually, i took a look at his psd file --

he was masking a line drawing over a redish colored image, so it was
taking on the color of the red. I masked it over a different image and it
turned to that color. He's just choosing the wrong technique for what he
wants to accomplish.

and no that's not a dumb question :)
