I am trying to build a java game for school where the main character is Link and I need these graphics made to be transparent. I am not able to install any programs on the computer(obvious security reasons). Can someone please help?

I was hoping someone could do it then. The school computers only have paint. Is there a free service on the internet I could use?

Ok. Thanks. Is there a free service on the internet I could use in the future?

Like a website I could go to and upload the picture and then make it transparent and download it. Not having much luck with google. Anyone know of one?

I did some research on creating transparent backgrounds with gifs in MS paint.

if you have anything from windows 2000 and below you can go to IMAGE -> ATTRIBUTES and actually select a color to be made transparent. The XP version of paint apparently doesn't have this option :O

so hopefully you might have that version of paint at your school

Well one last possible solution is to use portable gimp. It runs on a usb flash drive. Its an executable and you don't have to install anything.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/portablegimp/

Im quite sure that gimp (a great free image editor) can accomplish what you want to do. Probably a little overkill actually.

but anyhow you might want to make sure that you are allowed to use a usb drive application at the school also.

Sorry to butt in here,

Vladdrac, Pretty please...lololol will you tell me the steps to get a transparent image. I think I must be doing it wrong. I don't want you to do it for me, just how to.
Thanks.

Well im not sure at all about photoshop 5. But I am going to assume it is the same.

Basically you are going to want to take the gif image and make a copy of the background layer to unlock it.

Image

You may have to convert it to RGB color, to this this it should be IMAGE->MODE->RGB COLOR from the top menu.

Image

Just go ahead and delete the original image layer then.

From here you can select the background. I use the magic wand tool to do this. Not sure if that is available in 5 or not. You may have to find some other way to select it.

Image

Once you have selected the background (or whatever area you want to be transparent) just hit delete.

Image

Now just go to the file menu and save as....

Make sure to save as a .gif

Image

a menu should pop up with a transparency box. Make sure that is checked.

Image

Save and you are done.

Hope that is not far from what you have to do in 5...I have only used Photoshop since v.7 so i don't know.

Sorry about the long reply, took a little nap :P

First to give many thank to Vladdrac ,

I have known Vladdrac since I joined Ozzu and found him a very helpful member at Ozzu. Azoundria, do you thnk I did'nt try myself many times first. Do you think I hav'nt scoured the net for a solution to my problem? I can assure you I have. I have looked and tried for a week now.

When I come to Ozzu its to try to help other people and not often I need an answer from these forums, yesterday I saw someone ask a question I needed help with and found it here, is'nt that why Ozzu is here and not to look elsewhwere? A question on 'Transparent was looking at me in this thread so I asked and recived - that to me IS Ozzu.

Vladdrac, many thanks!

Because websites are for information. It's applications that perform image editing.

Nice tutorial Vladdrac.

No worries about the delay in answering I am just grateful for what you did for me and also other newbies to pshop. I think your tut is great and should work in my 5 LE.

Just for anyone who needs a gif image transparent in the future, I found gifWorks.com, which lets you edit gifs for free without downloading any program.

I mustnt have been searching the right terms before.
