Transparent areas in an image

Hi guys,

Im using Jasc's Paintsop Pro 8 and I cant find info anywhere on how to
make sections of an image transparent in the tutorial on masks in the program which is also so damn confusing, I would "REALLY" appreciate if some one could give me some pointers on this...pleeeze.
