(I'm using PS7 but I think this is the same for CS)

Open your PSD in Photoshop. This must have a transparency to begin with - so turn off any background layers until you can see the checkerboard pattern.

Now you can either use CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + S or goto the file menu and choose FILE/SAVE FOR WEB. This should evoke the web export interface.

On the right hand side in the "Settings" group, choose GIF as the file type and below that make sure thet the "Transparency" box is checked.

While you're here, you need to verify the other settings. Some of my default settings are:

Algorithm: Perceptual
Dither: No Dither
Transparency Dither: No Dithering
Interlaced: unchecked
Colors: 256

The other important thing here is the Matte color. With transparent GIF's the pixel is either ON or OFF, no inbetween. If you have an anti-aliased edge in your graphic, the exporter will make jagged edges out of it witht he color you specify for your Matte.

Click save and you'll be good to G.O.

Does that help?

If the background layer is a solid color, then yes, that would be the problem.

The background layer is locked by default, but it can be deleted by dragging it to the trash can in the layers palette. I think you can change this in the new document dialog (CTRL + N, or File/New) in the "contents" group, by selecting the "Transparent" radio button.

No worries suzie - you are not a pain at all and that's why Ozzu is here anyway ;)

If you mean that the S image turns black when you go to export it, I would guess that you need to add more colors in the export dialog. I'd start with 256 colors (the maximum number of colors that a gif can index).

If it's black in the PSD and you want to make it white, just do CTRL-I. This will invert all the colors. But it will convert all of them.
