Dumb cuestión, ¿han ncurses (y, por tanto, libncurses) instalado?

Ah, que se encuentra un informe de error -- http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70700

En el fondo, ya sea en ncurses emerge de nuevo con el parámetro USE unicode, unicode o eliminar de sus parámetros USE.
