Hi everyone,
it would be really great if someone could offer me
a little advice. I'm working on a project for a friend
but I'm not a professional designer.

I can use flash fine, but actionscript isn't my strong
point.

She is trying to create a kind of movie player for
one of her sites, its going to be for training video's.
She grown rare plants, and wants to share her tips etc..
in a type of short course.

I have an idea what needs doing, and I have an
image in my mind.

Take a look at this image to understand the following:
http://www.quayhaven.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/layout.gif

I was thinking we have our main movie, which holds
three other movie clips.

B : Is where the external .swf movie containing the
video will load. I might just load an mpg or avi, but
at present I'm thinking of converting the movie to
a .swf file.

c : Is another external .swf file which contains the
chapter content. For example in the picture you see
chapter 1's content, section 1, section 2 etc..
If you click the section part it loads that video
content into space B.

It will also have chapter buttons for previous or next,
this will change load another .swf movie into section C
containing either the previous or next chapters content.

A : Will remain constant, containing buttons to control
the movie which is currently loaded into space B. These
include the usual, Play, Pause etc... and a timeline
for the movie.

When the last movie in the chapter plays it should
automatically load the next chapters content list into
space C, and play the first movie of that chapter in
space B.

Right now I don't have all the knowledge to create the
action script to make the movies load in and such, but
don't worry I'm not asking to be handed everything on a
silver plate. I just want advise as to what i need to
reasearch (for example is it the loadmovie actionscript
command that will do all this) and whether or not it
can be done as I've described?

Any help will be great, thanks guys.

well, i will use loadMovie.. like this..
main.swf (main movie) it may have empty MovieClips that will load the external swf files A,B anc C. Supose to call MC 01 "load01", you can put some script like
loadMovie("a.swf", "load01");
where a.swf is your external file and load01 is the instance name of the empty MC that will "holds" or "load" your swf into the main scene. make something like that with the anothers and study about the ways you could have to make some multi-preloaders, etc. and don´t forget to read about paths, _root and _parent that you may use on the menu...

I found that very helpful, thanks. I took aquick look around the web, and in a few books for the loadmovie action and now I have a good enough understanding to make a start.

Just to be cheecky and ask another question:

I now know how to control the externally loaded movie from the main timeline, play, pause, stop etc... but how can I have a movie progress bar on the main timeline which shows the position of the play head in relation to the progress on the externally loaded movie?

Did that make scense?

Both Flash Mx and Flash 2004 has prebuilt media player component. You can use one of them. This is the most easy way for what you are trying to do. One catch though. As is, the ready made player will have to be in the same .swf as the movie. I suggest you load the external swf from the main swf. But show the progress bar along with other movie controls in the same external file.

To do that, import your movie file in a new fla. Drop it on the stage in first frame and let flash add as many frames as needed. Now drag and drop the media player component from the Component Panel(if it is not open, look for Components under Window) in the same frame on the same layer or on a new layer on top. No hassle. :)
