Flash n00b question - again

Hi guys,

I've got a pic (.gif) that I want to use in a flash movie. I can import it, and it shows up; so far so good.

The problem arises when I want to select some white shapes (doesn't matter what colour it is, actually) with the magic wand: the gif pic just doesn't behave as the shapes I draw with Flash MX (not surprised, to be honest). The wand doesn't select anything.

So how to I get the wand to select areas from my gif?

break it apart (right click on the gif from the stage and Break apart. only works with Flash MX and above)
