Hi,

I was just wondering what some of your experiences were in learning flash. Did it take an extensive amount of effort and was it worth it in the end? Easy to learn? Frustrating? I'm considering getting keyed up on the basics, but was a little hesitant if the basics aren't really going to do much for me if only good results can be achieved once a given level of competence is achieved...if you know what I mean...

I answered 'oh god, never really mastered it' because it's true. However,
the basics I've mastered, I guess. :?

There's just so much to it, and so many possiblities and ways to do
things, I don't think it could ever be mastered per se.

To get started, I would just suggest going through the onboard tutorials
that come with the flash software. I think they're excellent to begin with,
but keep in mind they aren't complete. They're only going to give you the
basics. The best way, as with most things, to learn is to play and
experiment, but flash requires you to know the basics to work right.

After you grasp the concepts, you can go to sites like http://www.kirupa.com
and start going through their tutorials to learn more basic and advanced
techniques. It's a fun process, but i would never try to tell you it's easy.
It took me almost a year to create a decent project in flash.

i have been at it for about a month or 2, i can say that i have created a flash site, it wasn't very good but from knowing nothing to managing that. isn't bad i suppose.

to master flash?....i guess no 1 can say they have mastererd it, it has so many possablilties.

the basics?..i could say i am at the point where i am looking at the advanced bits. but i am very far away from the likes of unflux and lostinbeta

to learn the basics fully, it could take 3 months +

i just skipped a lot and zipped streight to web design, trial and error along the way :iconthumbleft:

I voted "oh god, never really mastered it"

To master Flash you would have to master...

Design

Animation

Actionscript... which means Server-Side and Client Side communication, FSCommands for communication to programs, Object Oriented Programming (creating classes, methods, inheritance, etc), the drawing API, and well about a ton more that I don't feel like typing or can't think of at the moment.

So... mastering Flash... not very likely for a majority of people.

Becoming "proficient" in Flash though, depends on how easily you catch on to it, for some people it takes a few months, for others it takes a few years.

My guestimate would be about a year or more.

OK - thanks guys for all your comments!

I think basically, it means I need to have some free time for an extended period of time if I really want to produce something with it rather than hiring someone else to do it. Good to know ;)

I have mastered certain aspects of flash but no one can master them all, specially with them releasing newer versions all the time. Right now I'm trying to master 3d animation, its gonna be fun! :)

let's see...
to master effective use of the program takes about 3 months
to master the effective use of animation takes about 6-9 months
to master the effective use of ActionScript takes about 2 years
to master everything, is simple impossible, flash has so many functions

it all depends...
What do you want flash for?
Well your site require intense animation?
Well your site require intense backend compatidbility?

Some Notes:
- I still haven't been able to create an extremely powerful content management system w/ flash. There really is no good CMS for flash at this point it time... the farthest I've come is the ability to edit rich text within flash and to change basic color schemes and object positions, but still it doesn't even compare to PhP based, PhpNUKE.
- I really can't do 3d animation that well w/o Swift3d, but I hard;y ever use 3d effects anyways...
- If you know JavaScript, ActionScript should come easy
- If you know VB, CF, or PhP, and not JavaScript, you're basically screwed from the get go, good luck :)

:O omg did i say master? forgive me, I didnt mean that. I dont think I know anyone ven near mastering flash. All i am saying is that it doesnt take long to figure flash out. Using it is an experience in its own, and rating work good or bad can be hard depending on the critic. I know not every thing I have ever made was good, but I tend to be harsh on myself. :)
