How many Actionscripters do we have around here?

Hey everyone, I am relatively new here, I don't know much of anyone besides Unflux.

I noticed the Flash and Actionscript forum doesn't get much play around here, so I was wondering how many members here actually know and use Flash/Actionscript?

I myself am an actionscripter, never was much on the design side of Flash. I do know HTML, CSS, Javascript, and a tad bit of DHTML too (not much though), so I will be checking out the other sections as well and I will try to lend a hand to those in need when I can. :D

I really haven't got too far into Flash or ActionScript but I can program in numerous languages and I plan on eventually getting good with ActionScript once I get into Flash more.

I have made a few things with Flash MX, but not very good at it yet. However, considering it only took me 3 days to learn the couple of things I did do I feel pretty confident I can get better in time. ActionScript is something I still need to look at. And I have created a few ad banners in CoffeecupFirestarter. That's about it. It's on my agenda of things to do.

If you're interested in a looksee, here's the second thing I created in Flash. Pretty basic, but I felt it was a good start:

I know a little about actionscript. I've actually been learning alot about it lately whilst I design my new page. It's actualy helped me with my javascript hierarchy aswell.

use the search button! we've discussed this before. ;) (inside joke from kirupa)

I know some actionscript, and because of that a little javascript. But I
only do what I need to do to get by, not to be a programmer. I actually
dread working with code, as my forte is definitely the design end of
web design.

Glad to see you around here lost! I hope you find yourself a new little
home here. We're in need of more people like b_heyer, ATNO/TW,
cowkiller, etc. Hope you stick around a bit. :D

b_heyer: Yes, I learned Javascript before Actionscript, but I found that learning Actionscript has helped me learn more about Javascript, and vice-versa of course. Actionscript was easier for me to learn since I already knew Javascript.

Unflux: Hmm, good point about the search. Just think of this as an updated list of sorts :wink: I just may have found myself another nice little home, this seems like a nice forum :D

ATNO/TW: Pretty good for an early work in Flash. I certainly know I can't animate in Flash. I rely on actionscripted motion because I can manage that way better than I could manage any tweens :P

Here are some of my Flash experiments...

Jumping Orbs (100% AS):
http://www.lostinbeta.com/experimental/jumpOrbsAS.html

Spider (100% AS except for the logo title and random motion button):
http://www.lostinbeta.com/experimental/spider3.html

Soda Powered Rocket Pill (smoke bubbles generated via 100% AS):
http://www.lostinbeta.com/experimental/rocketShip.html

Resizing Photo Gallery (dynamically preloads, loads, and fades .jpg images):
http://www.lostinbeta.com/images/resizeGallery.html

I currently have no Flash animations under my belt, just AS experiments :lol:

as you are already well aware, you stun me with this stuff. It's
absolutely incredible, as usual. My favorite is the photo gallery, since it
seems to be the most practical.

Thanks dice81, I am horrible when it comes to motion tweens and such, it was when I got into Actionscript that I got better at Flash, and even then I wasn't too good. But I practiced, experimented, and learned new things every day and kept on pressing myself forward to eventually become what I am now... but I am still not done, I won't be happy until I become the next Keith Peters :twisted: (hehe, i say that like it's possible)

Hello first post on this site... :arrow: I hope more actionscripting flash users will show up because i agree it seems a little quiet in these parts. I use flash almost all the time love Macromedia, it reminds me of my first computer an Apple IIGs. 8) When i used that computer i used a program called HyperStudios... He's a question anyone remember that program??? Kind of ancient but very useful to incoperate animation, sounds,and graphics in a easy way. I'm still learning ActionScripting and loving every minute of it! :P Visit my site still underconstruction for some flash. My site name will be changed in the future and probably the stupid geocities host :oops:

SycomCOmp: Although I have never used it (nor even owned a computer then) I have heard of HyperStudio. I heard some pretty cool things about it, but I am sure Flash and other animation programs today are so much more poweful that HyperStudio. Of course there is the difficulty of implementation, but then again there is always SWiSH ( http://www.swishzone.com ), that is pretty much click and go, but also limits creativity quite a bit.

lol :D (hope this isnt going off the topic of this post) I agree 100% that HyperStudios is limited... I was fooling around one day looking to see if i could get the old program back and got this demo cd sent to me in the mail... I then tried it and realized yes this kind of sucks and I think i'll stick to the program Macromedia :) But the good times of my Apple i shall miss.... My friend bought it off of me and sold it to a pawn shop for $13 bucks.... That was the death of it.. :cry:
That's all

SycomCOmp: Yep, Macromedia rules ALL!!!!!!!! (ok, so that isn't exactly true, but it is true in a lot of cases)

kalbal: Thank you for removing your footer. As for the answer to your problem... you need to place a stop() action on the last frame of the timeline that is looping.

Spiffy :) Got any examples of stuff you made?

Heres a few quickies from me...
Code: [ Select ]
MovieClip.prototype.move = function() {
    this.s += 25;
    this._y = 100-(Math.cos(this.s*(Math.PI/180)))*10;
};
MovieClip.prototype.drawRect = function() {
    this.beginFill(0x0099CC, 100);
    this.moveTo(-1, -75);
    this.lineTo(1, -75);
    this.lineTo(1, 75);
    this.lineTo(-1, 75);
    this.endFill();
};
_quality = "LOW";
this.createEmptyMovieClip("wave", depth++);
wave.rect._visible = false;
this.createEmptyMovieClip("border", depth++);
with (border) {
    this.lineStyle(1, 0x000000, 100);
    this.moveTo(0, 0);
    this.lineTo(299, 0);
    this.lineTo(299, 199);
    this.lineTo(0, 199);
    this.lineTo(0, 0);
}
function drawRectangle() {
    i++;
    newRect = wave.createEmptyMovieClip("rect"+i, i);
    newRect.drawRect();
    newRect._y = 100;
    newRect._x = (i*2);
    newRect.onEnterFrame = move;
    if (i>=149) {
        clearInterval(addClips);
    }
}
addClips = setInterval(drawRectangle, 20);
  1. MovieClip.prototype.move = function() {
  2.     this.s += 25;
