sendAndLoad freezes the browser until it's done?

I'm using sendAndLoad to call a python script and receive data back from the script.
When the script takes a while to complete or has a lot of data to send back the filash file tends to lock the browser up while it is waiting.
Is there any way of making it wait in the background or something rather than locking the browser up like that? Something similar to a preloader perhaps?
