I'm wondering if anyone would be so kind to tell me how this interactive site is constructed:

Is this Flash application connected to a database, or something like that?

Could anyone refer me to other sites that use similar system?

My Flash skills are quite basic with only some experience of actionscripting.
At the moment I'm trying to do an interactive site in which a user (user 1) would be able to click on an object on the image map and assign a text to that object, and then invite friends to do the same. When user 1's friends come to the website and finish doing their part (assigning a text to an object), a line would appear from the first object (user 1) to the friends' objects.

I felt that the Flash tree at the URL above could be similar to my project.

Thanks for your help, I would appreciate any suggestions and information that anyone could give me.

Flash it's self will not connect directly to a database but it can talk to Coldfusion,PHP, Ruby on Rails, Java, ASP. So what you need is some sort of middle ware to enable connection to your server side scripting languages. There is a couple options

Flash Remoting - Cold Fusion comes with this service, PHP you could use AMFPHP or Weborb. WebOrb is available for all flavors including Ruby on Rails.

XML - It is really Simple to have your Webpages parse out XML from your database. In most cases this is my favorite choice as servers can generally handle more Req/s this way.

Here is a good Quick Start Video Tutorial from Lee Brimlow

It is in FLV format so if you dont want to write your own player to watch it here is one you can watch it with. ... 67081.html. I suggest going through all of his is fantastic....will change the way you code.
