Why flash player is necessary to play swf?

Why flash player is necessary to play swf?
Is there any other way so that swf can play on browser.

Why is a DVD player required to play a DVD? Its pretty much the same deal in that you need a player that understands the format.

There are other things that can open a swf file to edit, etc but I'm not sure why having the player would be an issue. Its free and available for a lot of different platforms.

Not to mention 99% of the population has flash player installed (source).
