I am looking for a tutorial or tips on how to do this particular type of scroll on a window. I have seen several tutorials for other types of scrolls but not this slide bar one I want to make.

what i need to know is how to make the button i created move up and down as a scroll button effecting text in the box.

heres the link to view the preview:

thanks in advance!

almost but no cigar. This type of scroll bar changes size depending on the amount of info in the window. I was doing fine until i got to that point in the tutorial and it threw me all off.

I need the distance of the scroll to change without changing the size of the graphics I made. Take a look at what I mean.

I have a box thats supposed to move on a line up and down. this needs to effect the text but the sensitivity of the scrolling needs to change whenever more or less text is in the box.

I've seen these type of scroll bars and I would think they would actually be easier than the os style.

Patience young padawan.

You mean something like this?

http://www.selteco.com/tutorials/t1033.asp

(ignore the creation of the up/down buttons and actions in the script that reference them if you don't want them)

not quite, i belive this bar is supposed to change depending on amount of text also. As you can see i have no up down buttons, just a little block thats a slider bar.

How do i do that?

No, that bar does not resize.

If you want to make your own, you can apply concepts taken from this tutorial on creating slider bars...

http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx/slider.htm

(though changing _x values to _y values... or just rotating the movieclip symbol that contains the slider)

And have the value of the slide be the scroll position of the scroll field.

The end value would be the TextField.maxscroll property, and the slider increments would adjust the TextField.scroll property.

Please, someone view the slid bar Im trying to build then just guide me in what steps to take or submit a clear tutorial.

I managed to get one to work using the slider bar tutorial i showed you.

I just changed
Code: [ Select ]
this.onEnterFrame=function(){
    ratio.text=mySlider.ratio;
}
  1. this.onEnterFrame=function(){
  2.     ratio.text=mySlider.ratio;
  3. }

to
Code: [ Select ]
this.onEnterFrame = function() {
    myTextBox.scroll = mySlider.ratio;
};
  1. this.onEnterFrame = function() {
  2.     myTextBox.scroll = mySlider.ratio;
  3. };

and
Code: [ Select ]
dragger.onPress=function(){
    this.startDrag(true,0,0,line._width,0);
    this.onEnterFrame=function(){
        ratio=Math.round(this._x) ;
    }
}
  1. dragger.onPress=function(){
  2.     this.startDrag(true,0,0,line._width,0);
  3.     this.onEnterFrame=function(){
  4.         ratio=Math.round(this._x) ;
  5.     }
  6. }

to
Code: [ Select ]
dragger.onPress = function() {
    this.startDrag(true, 0, 0, line._width, 0);
    this.onEnterFrame = function() {
        ratio = Math.round(this._x*_parent.myTextBox.maxscroll/line._width);
    };
};
  1. dragger.onPress = function() {
  2.     this.startDrag(true, 0, 0, line._width, 0);
  3.     this.onEnterFrame = function() {
  4.         ratio = Math.round(this._x*_parent.myTextBox.maxscroll/line._width);
  5.     };
  6. };

Then I rotated the sliderbar clip so that it was vertical instead of horizontal, and I created a textbox on the main timeline with the instance name myTextBox.

Worked like a charm.

[edit]Oh yeah, I might also add that I used the open source file at the end of the tutorial to give it a quick test-run. I used the version1 .fla file[/edit]

Did you give it an instance name? And reference that instance name correctly in the actionscript (in my example I gave it the instance name myTextBox)

yes i gave it the instance name

myTextBox

just as its referenced in the script.

I then tried adding a movie symbol to the text but that didn't work either. Does your example work? Can you post your file?
