I have an example below of what i would like to do. In the timeline project they have on a button press the time line will zoom in giving the events more room. If any one can give me any help to how they did this it will be greatly appreciated.

That's really very basic flash. The button click event is simply loading a movie clip. The "zoom" effect is just a basic tween inside the movie clip. The close button unloads the movie clip. Just about any flash beginner should be able to do that pretty easily.
