I've never used a commercial spyware cleaning program so I can't really comment on that.

The most popular free programs- and I'm sure you are aware of them- are Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy. I use those 2 exclusively. Still, I don't believe there is any one program that will get rid of everything.

If you're having trouble cleaning your system, you might want to follow the steps in this thread:

The entire thread contains links to lots of resources.

I was having alot of problems, freezeups in windows and outlook. First I went to housecalls because often times an outside can better see the problemsand it cleaned up things enough to where I don't freeze up so much. Then I went and found a program called "system mechanic".You could download it for a 30 day evaluation period so I did.Whatever the problem was that I had it cleared it up.It's a great program.

Afterwards, however, I was trying to reinstall windows 98 SE on my machine. but just as it was going to copy the files to the system I got the messege window' illegal operationSUWin' ,I clicked for details and it said "krn 386.exe at 0001:00002b23". so now I'm trying to figure out what happened.

Instead of removing spyware, they install it. Some will even attack whatever genuine protection your computer may already have, leaving it wide open to hackers, viruses, spyware and every other kind of malware imaginable.

Worse, trying to remove the scumware in the usual way can often result in even more spyware being installed, so if you have installed anything on this list, please get some advice before trying to remove it.

Spybot is great, but I wonder just how observant it is of all the potential spyware on your system. When it scans it shows all the software is scanning. One of the programs it scanned was FirewallNuke. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but that sounds like a pretty malicious program. What gives?

given by the name, it sounds like a pretty malicous program.

By the way, be careful where you get spybot from. I have seen downloads of spybot provided by third parties that contain spyware.

Make sure you get it from http://www.spybot.info or one of the official mirrors (listed on spybot.info )
//edit: He has a list of official sites, and that one is not on it. The real one is:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Another thing that can help eliminate that crap is by getting a web browser other than IE. I recommend firefox:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
It's a 4.5MB download and is much nicer than IE.

I would recommend using both Adaware Personal and Spybot, because both of them pick up things that the other one doesn't. Obviously in a commerical environment you can't use Ad-Aware personal, but on your home PC use both.
