the story goes, that the military designed the tape to fix holes and
hold things down in camp. Since the tape was made waterproof, it was
dubbed "duck" tape.

After years and years of military use, it finally made it's way into the
public market. Plumbers and HVAC and others started using it, and since
it was used on ductwork in houses, the name was deferred to "duct"
tape.

However, over time the real use and purpose came to light, and "duck"
tape made it's way back. If you go shopping for it, you will notice that
the name and the company are "duck" not "duct."

Sometimes I scare myself with the amount of useless info I retain.
