Not on here though.

A couple of years ago i started a new forum on my own personal website for no reason in particulr. I sort of forgot about the forum just at the same time i stopped doing anything to any of my websites.

Recently i have been trying to get the website design bug back and revisiting and tidying up alot of the stuff i ignored and neglected for so long - this forum included. The forum had only one registered user and a handfull of topics and posts. Look at it now...

I have my work cut out, anyone want to lend me a hand?

I have had a few idle forums like that on other websites. Once a few spammers find it they can abuse it really bad as you have seen.

There's so much spam there that I'd start a new forum, move the things I wanted to keep into that forum, then completely purge the other forums before putting things back. Shouldn't take a single person long to do by the looks of things. :)

I once used a phpBB as a guestbook. I hid everything except for one thread that anyone could post to. It only took folks like those about 1 month to figure it out and load it up with spam even though nobody could see their posts.

I should point out that all of that was posted since May last year

To be honest, i am oddly quite proud of that to the point where i don't want to bin it.

what about removing the spam URLs from posts with some specially crafted SQL queries, slapping some Adsense on it, and seeing what happens ?

I see every once in awhile the topics get a half-dozen or so views, put Analytics on it, see where those views are coming from.

What's the worst that could happen ?

Hell, I'm tempted to setup a forum on a domain I have just sitting around right now so I can try this.

Will actually look into that.

As a matter of interest, anyone know if it is possible to do a mass disable of membership. I don't want to bin or ban members...just to disable them until i figure out my next move. It appears that despite restricting people from signing up to the site now that older spammers appear to be coming back and posting away.

The more i look at this the more amazed i get at how extreme it is. The top poster on the site posted 2929 spam messages between the registered date of 13 October 2009 and last active date of 19 November 2009! that's bizarre.

I think the easiest thing might be to set permissions for the Registered Users group to omit posting permissions on the forums.

If I were you I'd completely remove that forum... the content there ruined your chances with Google (if it can).

The Russian is advocating child porno and porn in general, and the english... well, you can read english.

But if you want to continue with that particular forum, I'd be happy to help.

To be honest, i have no need for the forum so the chances are i will end up binning it.

I always wanted a forum though that had tens of thousands of posts and thousands of members...just not like this

Yeah it was kind of odd, the couple forums it happened to they had about as much spam as you had there with months worth of it. The funny thing is that traffic went from about 5 per day to about 500-600 people per day, I think mostly Yahoo traffic, Google must have been smarter there. Still I didn't want any of that content on the board so purged it all, it was highly irrelevant traffic anyway.

I wonder how long it would take to edit every topic and post to make it look like genuine topics. Then changing all the usernames to get rid of the spammer type usernames. This way the forum will look genuine and the users will look genuine and in turn bring in more genuine members.

I will bin the forum soon i reckon, i don't have time to deal with forums i wont even use so makes no sense in me keeping it.

I think what disappoints me the most is the most users online was in Oxtober. I definitely wasn't one of them :(

I suppose you could do a SQL update on the users table and set everyone to banned ? apart from admin user of course !! ?

There must be a site somewhere that tells spammers where to put there links ?

Forum is already restricting new registrations, so all the spammers that are spamming are current members.

Best bet is to restrict the forums to a set group only and not move anyone into it.

Been busy recently so not had time to deal with this, it's possible that at this time tomorrow i will have binned the forum altogether.

I don't understand what you are trying to do... are you trying to stop people from making posts?

If so, just deny all the privileges in the user groups permissions and only administrators would be able to do anything... Just selecte No Access as the default permission and nobody would do anything... including see all that shiza.
