Ill check out pc cillin, i love a one time fee.

I ran the free avg and it found some trojans that been in my computer since just after I bought the thing.

Norton had failed to recognize it in the past....

Well, the thing is that no matter how good of a Anti-Virus you have it can't get everything. Actually, anti-viruses are not made to get rid of "most" viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, ect. They only take out the "big" threats. Why, I don't know why they choose to do it like this. They could easily get with Adaware or something and make a program that does all. But, anyways like I said you may have a ton of stuff on you sys that your anti-virus just will not pick up. Spybot and Adaware are both really good free programs and they both pick up a lot of the loose ends left behind from the anti-virus.

The new PC Cillin Internet Security is amazing:
Fast, Excellent Detection + optimized concerning ressources...
It has everything fom, firewall to spyware and adware cleaner......
The cool part its dosent cost a thing compared to others with what it offers.
+ the renwal is cheap...

As for pandasoftware...i bought last year panda platinum...it is a full antivrus but is not that good on detection....(it skipped a Klez infeted file, that got caught by pc cillin, when i was installing it). But its the best looking and easiest to use ever

I'd recommend AVG for home use since it's free.

I really hate the AVG interface, so I run Symantec/Norton Antivirus 2003... It's lightweight, has fast updates and is very stable!

I tried NAV 2004 beta (final RC) but it made my machine look like my c64 :)

I cant believe no-ones said it yet, but,

KASPERSKY ANTI-VIRUS PERSONAL PRO!!! Its the mutts nutts!

Best one out there by far, although they all do the basic job, this one is ver very very good. It'll cost you a bit though, but havent you been introduced to the wonderful world of P2P sharing?

Kaspersky is the best along with Mcafee-forget this commercialized Norton name-it detects quite less than Kaspersky and Mcafee only talking a lot the guys from Symantec!

Format hard disk and reinstall everything is the only solution (thats legal), or get a crack from... (didn't even bother putting a URL)
or open it up and remove expiry date..google it.

You can trick it by setting the clock back before you run an update each time. At least, that worked on the version I had on my machine before I dumped it for AVG, that is.... =]

There are enough viruses that can find their way on your system without you doing ANYTHING that you're fooling yourself if you think you're smart enough to stay safe. You've been very lucky if you've never had a virus and you're on a Windows system without any sort of protection.

Oh, and for firewall... dump Zone Alarm... That app has screwed up every system I've every seen it installed on (mine and friends). I recommend Kerio personal firewall these days, it's simple enough that anyone can use, but has the ability to be very granular as well. It even can firewall off applications on your system from other applications on your system, if you want to mess with that.

Only once has AVG missed a virus, and Kerio caught it trying to send datagrams to my other system (home network) so I was able to isolate it before it did any real damage.

Anyway, I know this was an old topic, but it was linked to from a new one, and it's a good bit of info that never hurts being updated now and then =]

.c

EDIT. Forgot one thing. Kerio is FREE. If you pay for it, I think it comes bundled with AVG as and added bonus. eh? Pay for a free peice of software and get another free peice of software? Well, you get support when you buy it, of course, and I think you get the pay version of AVS too, but I don't know... since I'm never going to pay for either =]

Hee hee hee... well on my family's pc i have mcaffee, avg and kapersky installed, cos my family are useless at anything security.

On my pc, i run ZoneAlarm, which is excellent in my view, together with a few permanent-resident spyware programs- Spybot S&D, AdAware, and use a free scanner called Bazooka for manual removal of viruses and quick checks.

Ive never had Norton.... considered it once bt i cudnt b bovard to walk to work and buy it.... :P

IMHO, Mcafee is junk. Especially the security center package. I prefer to use Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, which is provided to me since I am a University of Iowa student. It is slim and runs nicely.

However, when I work on a student's computer, the best way to make sure it is clean enough to install SAV on it is to run the stinger that Mcafee makes, checks for something like the most current or prevelant 40 viruses, all in a handy little executable file. Very nice.
