Ahh.. so that's what 'survivors' means.. lol

1) Is the number of people involved relevant?

2) Was there a drawing or lottery of some sort?

The fact that there were at least three, yes. Beyond that, no.

lol, perhaps. But that just means that you're the one who gets to have fun solving it.

// side note: you are close. very close. you're original guess was almost spot on except for a few specific aspects that were off base just enough to make it incorrect.

Ok, here goes...

There's a shipwreck and three of the survivors end up on a deserted island together. There's no food there, so they're all pretty much starving to death. Near death and delirious, the man vaguely remembers getting fed some meat, which ends up saving his life. When he recovers enough, and realizes his wife didn't make it, he asks the other guy where the meat came from. The guy says he caught an albatross. The meat continues to sustain them until they are finally rescued.

So the man goes into the bar, eats the albatross, realizes he had eaten his wife because this tastes different, and unable to live with the knowledge of what he had done, he goes outside and shoots himself.

Your answer is close enough that I'm going to call it correct. There are many different variations of this riddle but the general premise is always the same. Here's the solution that was given to me many years ago:

A group of people are shipwrecked and become stranded on a desert island. Unable to find food and shelter, many of the survivors eventually die on the island, including the man's wife, who is the most recent to die.

The remaining survivors managed to catch an albatross, but it would not provide enough meat to feed everyone and they decide that they must resort to cannibalism to stay alive. They elect one person to prepare the albatross meat and that of the man's wife to look the same, and everyone eats, no one knowing what meat they are eating.

The rest is as you described. The man, upon being rescued, orders the raw albatross and realizes that he has never tasted that meat before. Stricken with shame and guilt, he kills himself.

Aww.. so there was an albatross involved. And the man knew at the time he might possibly be eating his wife. Shoulda thought of that...

Well, if you're calling it correct that's good enough for me!! :D
