If you have seen this riddle before and/or know the correct answer, I ask that you please not participate so that others may ask questions and make guesses. The solution to this is well known and is posted in many places on the Internet. A quick Google search will reveal it. If you already know or choose to look up the answer, please refrain from posting in this thread.

Here's the deal: you may only ask yes/no questions, and you may not ask more than 2 questions at a time until they have been answered. Multiple people may ask their questions at once, but any individual person may not ask more until theirs have been answered.

This riddle was given to my eighth grade class way back when I was in, well, eighth grade. Yes, there is a solution, and yes, I know what it is.

The riddle:
A man walks into a bar and orders raw albatross. He takes one bite of it, gets up, walks outside, and shoots himself. Why?

Remember, you may only ask two yes/no questions at a time. I will answer them as frequently as I can.

You're definitely getting somewhere. To solve the riddle, you have to be able to describe the entire story, so once you think you've figured it out, you can go for it, but remember I'll only give a yes or no as to whether it's completely correct.

How detailed to I have to be? Ok, here goes...

This dude gets trapped on a deserted island with his wife and some other guy, let's call the other guy Hannibal. So they don't have any food, and they're all starving so one day Hannibal shows up and says "hey look, I killed an albatross, have some meat" The guy was starving, so he eats the meat, but secretly wonders how Hannibal managed to catch an albatross with his bare hands. He also wonders where his wife is. Finally, after they escape from the island, they guy puts two and two together and decides to find out once and for all. So he goes into the bar, eats the albatross, realizes it didn't taste like the other meat he had, and shoots himself.

My only question is, why didn't he shoot Hannibal instead?

They other guy's name was actually Frank, not Hannibal? Just kidding

I seriously didn't look it up. It just sounded like one of those deserted island scenarios once I figured out the part about him being fed his wife.

Well that opens up a lot of possibilities...

1) Was the other person on the island a woman?

2) Was the other person the wife of man #2 (Hannibal)?

Irrelevant, but I'll say no.

Same as above.

Look, I don't know how to prove I didn't cheat, but I really didn't. I just like figuring out puzzles like this and have done them a lot before.

Once you get past the initial mystery of this riddle, it's just a matter of piecing together the cliches. The deserted island thing was pretty easy to get to because of the albatross. I only figured out the part about eating his wife because of questions other people were asking.

Anyway, I guess I can't prove I didn't look this up, but I would like to see if I can finish it on my own since I've gotten this far. Sorry if you don't believe me.

Ahh.. so that's what 'survivors' means.. lol

1) Is the number of people involved relevant?

2) Was there a drawing or lottery of some sort?

The fact that there were at least three, yes. Beyond that, no.

lol, perhaps. But that just means that you're the one who gets to have fun solving it.

// side note: you are close. very close. you're original guess was almost spot on except for a few specific aspects that were off base just enough to make it incorrect.

Ok, here goes...

There's a shipwreck and three of the survivors end up on a deserted island together. There's no food there, so they're all pretty much starving to death. Near death and delirious, the man vaguely remembers getting fed some meat, which ends up saving his life. When he recovers enough, and realizes his wife didn't make it, he asks the other guy where the meat came from. The guy says he caught an albatross. The meat continues to sustain them until they are finally rescued.

So the man goes into the bar, eats the albatross, realizes he had eaten his wife because this tastes different, and unable to live with the knowledge of what he had done, he goes outside and shoots himself.

Your answer is close enough that I'm going to call it correct. There are many different variations of this riddle but the general premise is always the same. Here's the solution that was given to me many years ago:

A group of people are shipwrecked and become stranded on a desert island. Unable to find food and shelter, many of the survivors eventually die on the island, including the man's wife, who is the most recent to die.

The remaining survivors managed to catch an albatross, but it would not provide enough meat to feed everyone and they decide that they must resort to cannibalism to stay alive. They elect one person to prepare the albatross meat and that of the man's wife to look the same, and everyone eats, no one knowing what meat they are eating.

The rest is as you described. The man, upon being rescued, orders the raw albatross and realizes that he has never tasted that meat before. Stricken with shame and guilt, he kills himself.

Aww.. so there was an albatross involved. And the man knew at the time he might possibly be eating his wife. Shoulda thought of that...

Well, if you're calling it correct that's good enough for me!! :D
