Can anybody tell me how to protect my IP adress?
Does it take a software..or do I need a hacker ? Is it safe? Most places I've been propose a software totally free ..but based on the reviews it's full of spyware and can even slow your connection...and I don't want any of that....
Except the city, the latitude, the time, the country what else does it says? Can people even get your name??
Thanks
x. lol

Hello Frankish, Welcome to ozzu,
I do believe we have had this question before! for more imfo than i can give you, search ozzu..its there!
No one under normal circumstances can get your actual private address, for this is not, as far as i know accessable, even a host who has been approached by a person for those details, can not give it to anyone, they would have to get a court order first, and you would have to have done something very wrong!
E-mail when you look at the mail properties only give where the mail came from, the sender, something like your e-mail name, provder, ip address, return path, even if you go to "whois" they just say about host not the name of the ip address thats because "data protection" is very much in place, the location can be had through various softwares, but not your home number, stop worrying, keep everything you do on the internet above board, keep your details as safe as possible and enjoy being on-line.

You usually can't find much information from an IP address aside from maybe a city, and maybe if the person was really good at searching/social engineering, they might be able to get more info. But the RIAA had a hard time getting information from IP address, so some guy who is dicking around probably won't get anything.

If you really are worried, you can get a program called anoynomizer (or soemthing like that) and it sits in IE and uses proxies to connect to websites, so the websites you go to will see some random IP address, and not your own. The problem with this, is that it will slow you internet down, since your traffic has to go to some random place around the world, then to the site, then back to that random place, then to your computer.

But if you have a firewall, especially a hardware one (like a router) you should be safe from any hackers/script kiddies.

Thanks a lot Suzie...I spent all night looking throughout "Ozzu search" like you said...It's a great place to get some help and find an answer to your questions...but based on the search I did, the only posts I found under the key words "IP address protection" were difficult to understand. I mean (no offence lol) but the whole CC+ programing or the "how do I ban this guy from my forum" with the programing and everything..wasn't what I was looking for....but yea the reason why I want to know that is because I got this guy harassing me ...he says he knows were I live etc....
anyway...it's been very stressing!!

Thanks again...

That's good to know...thanks Tom. Speaking of "Firewall" where do you get that? is it already on my computer and I just have to turn it on? or is it like a software I need to download or buy? Does it affect the computer at all? does it slow things down?

Hi frankish,
In less than five minutes ozzu gave me this:
http://www.ozzu.com/ftopic26761.html&highlight=ip
http://www.ozzu.com/ftopic215.html&highlight=ip
http://www.ozzu.com/ftopic24740.html&highlight=ip..and this is where you can view all the searches lolol
http://www.ozzu.com/search.php?mode=results..
Some times searches can be a right pain, just try one word not a sentence, i just imput ip.
I can't answer programing questions, i answer what i can by way of help.

wow...well thanks a lot susie... :!:

The first two subjects you found for me in less than five minutes on the ozzu search are useful...but only if you want to ban somebody if you have a forum or want to know how to locate a user (which wasn't totally clear ..)...I just wanted to get some solid info on the vulnerability of your IP address to the public. cuz I've already read those..., Anyway, the symantec & zonelabs softwares are sure available if you need them.....but to be honest I think I'll start saving some money ... :(

thanks though....
you've been very useful.

With you IP ppl can get a lil info about you. Ive done IP tracking before, but I can only get too the Country, state, and city, sometimes the areacode or street address. If you wanna hide you IP, find a "IP Spoofer" . It does just what the name says..

you can get alot of information from an IP -
http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation

however, it SHOULD get the IP address of your webhost (in my case it is a few hunder km away)

for more stuff on internet security I would recommend -
http://www.grc.com/

SO.....do you protect your IP address IH8Purple? If so ..the link you just gave me (http://www.grc.com) does it helps people cover their IP address? Because the only thing I'm looking for is a software that can cover up my location. I'm probably gonna get the one on symantec.com that susie recommended me ..but that website you just gave is all about mass storage data recovery & maintenance software. Should I use any of that>?
Thanks

Earlier he said that he was being stalked by some guy.

Frankish, as far as I know the most the guy can get out of your IP is your home city. Unless you live in quite a small town it should be impossible for him to actually track you down. Also the information can be easily found by anyone and I don't think there's anyway to actually hide it without going through a proxy, or something along those lines.

A firewall will be helpful in protecting your computer but it won't stop anyone from detecting your IP and finding details about you. But you should still install it.

As for this guy stalking you, how is he doing it? If it through email you can find out his IP probably and say the same thing back to him, that you know where he lives.

Good luck with this,

Xel
