Protecting defense departments networks cost U.S. taxpayers more than $100 million over the past six months, U.S. Strategic Command officials said yesterday. http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/40737

Here's a few comparisons to put that into perspective.

  • That's roughly $6.34 spent every second.
  • A single 9 man team consisting of the highest paid players in MLB would cost more for one season.
  • 33% of MLB teams couldn't afford to pay their players to finish the season with $100 million
  • That would be enough to pay the 20 highest paid players in the NFL to play 5 regular season games, less than one-third of a season.
  • 75% of NFL teams couldn't afford to pay their players to finish the season with $100 million, including both of last years Superbowl teams (Arizona, Pittsburgh)
  • A 5 man team consisting of the highest paid players in the NBA would cost more for the season
  • The NBA couldn't pay more than 2 teams for a season with $100 million

I read on Slashdot today where the US Electric grid is compromised by a hacker proggy or two or three, yet no one is doing much about it.

not sure the "cost" is being weighed correctly
