There's no single definition. I've always believed this is actually a failing of many languages - that a single word ('love' is one example, but there are others) takes on too many different meanings, and every person will interpret it in a different way. Heck, the same person will interpret it in a different way at different times, in different circumstances. So it's a word we all use but probably we all mean something different by it.

I don't think I could put the definition of love into a succinct phrase - certainly not better than dictionaries have done. but I guess we all know it when we feel it - whether it's love of chocolate, love for one's cats, love of sailing, or the love of your life. It's a warm fuzzy feeling.

I do heartly believe that E.E. Cummings did a great job at showing what love is with poetry.

being to timelessness as it's to time,
love did no more begin than love will end:
where nothing is to breathe to stroll to swim
love is the air the ocean and the land

(do lovers suffer?all divinities
proudly descending put on deathful flesh:
are lovers glad?only their smallest joy's
a universe emerging from a wish)

love is the voice under all silences,
the hope which has no opposite in fear:
the strength so strong mere force is feebleness:
the truth more first than sun more last than star

- -do lovers love?why then to heaven with hell.
whatever sages say and fools,all's well-- e.e.cummings

Hmm, I think each of us has different taste in poetry. Some I like you may find funny and dislike, and the other way around.

to this one, E.E Cummings, I like.

Hope I can receive and read more of this anywhere else. Maybe I'm not that good, I prefer shorter poems.

:hmm:

If you are in Love then you feel that you are living in a different world. So, I define it - Love is restless, boundless, fearless and above from everything.

I think J. Geils said it best when he said, "Love stinks. Yeah, yeah."

Seriously though, I think the idea of "love" is a catch-all moniker of many different emotions and emotional states. Therefore, a strict definition is elusive while figurative definitions, such as poetic ones, are easier but incomplete.

Most of these emotions, I think, are derived from evolutionary traits which have benefited our species and its ability to endure. Things like clinging to your parents as a child, procreation, protecting the family unit, participating in community all benefit the individual which in turn benefits the species.

All these things can be described as a type of love, but are all distinctly different instincts. The loves I feel for my mom, wife, children, friends and country are all different, in my view.

Love [is] the power to make me quit thinking about myself, momentarily.

The Definition of Love

Quote:
My love is of a birth as rare
As 'tis for object strange and high;
It was begotten by Despair
Upon Impossibility.

Magnanimous Despair alone
Could show me so divine a thing
Where feeble Hope could ne'er have flown,
But vainly flapp'd its tinsel wing.

And yet I quickly might arrive
Where my extended soul is fixt,
But Fate does iron wedges drive,
And always crowds itself betwixt.

For fate with jealous eye does see
Two perfect loves, nor lets them close;
Their union would her ruin be,
And her tyrannic pow'r depose.

And therefore her decrees of steel
Us as the distant poles have plac'd,
(Though love's whole world on us doth wheel)
Not by themselves to be embrac'd;

Unless the giddy heaven fall,
And earth some new convulsion tear;
And, us to join, the world should all
Be cramp'd into a planisphere.

As lines, so loves oblique may well
Themselves in every angle greet;
But ours so truly parallel,
Though infinite, can never meet.

Therefore the love which us doth bind,
But Fate so enviously debars,
Is the conjunction of the mind,
And opposition of the stars.

Love is a passion which makes any person blind so away from it I said it because when love ditched it hurt very much.
