One thing that always bugs me about living on an island is that very few things (useful things) are manufactured here.

I am starting an online community with ecommerce store and will have to import almost everything!

Being part of the EU must have some perks but I don't know if I should order from the US or EU. I have been looking at promotional goods in the uk and they seem pricier.. But then the US imports will require higher shipping costs and custom duty.

The one thing that makes me pull closer to the US goods is that they are awesome. I mean really, great quality and they can customize anything to suit your needs.

I am taking about T shirts, hats, bags, coins, flashlights, stickers etc.

Any comments people?

I would recommend ordering good from the UK to reduce the shipping cost. Once you build enough clientele, reputation and a good bank account, you can expand your business by reaching across the Atlantic ocean.

By then you would have already mastered the process of running an online business and deeper knowledge of your nice/market.

The shipping cost is sometimes one of the major reasons for shopping cart abandonment. I would not take that change is I have a second option to increase my conversion rate.

I have quite a few e-commerce web sites: http://www.marypauline.com, http://www.candleslovers.com, http://www.figirinescollectors.com and will soon launch http://www.venustemple.com. I do most of my business with clients in the USA to avoid all those Customs form to fill out in order to ship products abroad.

In your case it's the other way around. If the demand for US goods is intense and your customers are willing to fork the shipping cost (absorbed in your retail price) then, go for it.

Good luck.
