well windose is better for running games, and XP is the only OS that allows you to use more than 256 Mb of ram. So I use XP, although I have been lightly considering double booting with Linux, I won't try it until I can free up some time

Do you have any proof of that? I've used 512 on my windows 98se for the longest time and it always recognized it as 512. I'd love to see some proof.

The only REAL reason that windoze is better with games is because games are generally designed for support ONLY on windoze. There for you can never go out to walmart and pick up a game for linux, won't happen.

1-Win98SE, Slackware 9.1
2-Windows since I was about 7 (10 years), Linux religously for 4 months, one flavor or another over 3 years.
3-Linux - no damn ram hooks, and far superior. Oh yes: OPEN SOURCE.
4-Win98 Like the back of my hand. Slackware like my back, not quite ;)
5-Windows will get it's just deserts, and Linux will still be around.
6-I can't say I'm an expert, but practice helps ;)

1.What OS do you use?
WinXP / Novell

2.For how long u heve been using it?
I have a shrick wrapped copy of DOS 1 on 5.25 inch disks!!!! so a fair while!!!

3.What OS u prefer?why?
Corporate Desktops - Windows XP
Corporate Server - Novell Netware
Home Desktop - Mix of Windows (XP) / Suse Linux.

4.How good u consider ur self with using ur OS?
Pretty good. the leap from DOS to shell scripting was pretty easy

5.What is the future of the OS?as u think?
It's taken Windows pretty much 20 odd years to get where they are today... Give Linux a few more years and I think we'll see them challenging the desktop market really well.

6.How did u become an expert in your field?if u are?
Lots of coffee, lots of neglecting my family and friends ;)

hmm I found this

http://www.extremetech.com/print_articl ... 849,00.asp

seems that:

Quote:
9X can only efficiently use about 160 Mb. Anything over 256 will actually slow the system down in most cases. [ depending on the motherboard & BIOS ] When 98 first came out, most systems were running 32 to 64 Mb of memory & 128 to 256 sticks were in servers. It wasn't built to run large amounts of RAM like NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP was.

and

Quote:
We've benchmarked 98 & 98SE with from 32 to 512 of memory & see a definate increase in performance up to the 160 mark. It drops off up to 192 & is about totally flat above 192. Anything that will grab & use anything from 192 & above will usually crash most 98 systems."

2.For how long u heve been using it?
- Just MacOSX now, I converted. Half a year. The rest for like 10 years or so... since the beginning man, since the beginning.
3.What OS u prefer?why?
- Mac OSX... unix base... VERY blunt functionality, there's no BS, little virus worry, good networking skillz, etc... works well.
4.How good u consider ur self with using ur OS?
- The Mac OSX, not so well since I'm new, the rest I'm proficient.
5.What is the future of the OS?as u think?
- Can't ever tell...
6.How did u become an expert in your field?if u are?
- Im a graphic designer, of both illustration, digital painting and artwork, branding, 3d modelling, and website production. I come from parents who were mechanical engineers and a brother who's a software engineer. It's in the blood-and I've been on a computer since I was 4, lol. Done graphic work since middle school.. naturally, everything came together.

1.What OS do you use? FreeBSD [4.9, servers; 5.2.1 Desktops, laptops], RH9, RHE, SLES, AIX, Solaris... and oh yeah, some win2k
2.For how long u heve been using it? er, uh... VMS goes back to the early 80's, Unix shortly thereafter. Over 20 years, at least. (I remember hacking mainframes from NCR teletypes back in the 70's... did I say that?
3.What OS u prefer?why? FreeBSD; Stability, Security, Speed
4.How good u consider ur self with using ur OS? hmm. :) Better than some, worse than others. ;)
5.What is the future of the OS?as u think? *nix on the desktop -- IBM is transitioning towards a 2005 goal, internally. Security, while it has always been one of the most important factors, will become such in the eyes of the CFO's.
6.How did u become an expert in your field?if u are? Am I? Hmm. Years and years of hacking. Rewriting components I liked, making new ones where required.

1.What OS do you use?
XP Home (desktop), XP Prof (laptop), RH Linux (file server)

2.For how long u heve been using it?
the first one: because i wanted the software compatability of XP, and it was cheaper the Prof, Prof: b/c it came with my laptop, Linux: b/c its free and more stable then XP

3.What OS u prefer?why?
XP Prof, because it is compatible with all the programs i use... and Prof is better then Home just on basic principle, because microsquish basiccaly just took a hack saw to XP Prof and cut out a bunch of stuff to make the Home Edition

4.How good u consider ur self with using ur OS?
pretty good, i can write VB, and J scripts for it, i can troubleshoot my way out of most OS problems without help...

5.What is the future of the OS?as u think? hopefully ppl will wisen up and start using linux, then i can shoot XP, and use linux and be able do use all my programs...

6.How did u become an expert in your field?if u are?
ummm... im in high school, i dont consider myself an expert, but i do consider myself pretty good... and i got that way by just going in and messing around with everything...
