Try it - http://www.freerice.com/index.php.

It's a word game basically, and it gets hard really really fast, but for every word you get right a sponsor will donate a certain number of grains of rice to be sent to the poor and hungry. And the guy that set it up doesn't take a dime of it - it all goes directly into charity. Pretty cool really...

Go on. It's the least you can do. :D

I've used this on and off for years. It's 1 grain of rice per word, I believe, unless they changed it.
I hate when I start getting to the harder words and then guess randomly for like 10 in a row and get them right and then get retarded words...

Played at best level 50, I think the highest level I reached was 44 and the lowest 36. Stopped at 2500 grains after wasting 1/2 an hr. I think given enough time one can go until the database is exhsuted. Because the ones you give wrong answers to, come back after 5-7 questions and if you were paying attention to the correct answer on top left the last time you get that right the next time.

100 grains. Wow, I mean how does this actually work? When we make correct a word, how does the organization benefit from it?

importunate is my next word, I have to stop for now.

The word "irrelevant" appeared. I remember being told quite recently by a moderator on this site that the word doesn't exist.

I can start using it again now.

I set a 2 minute timer & was able to rack up 1.33 grains of rice per second.

1.33 * 60 * 60 = 4,800 rice grains per hour

According to this there are about 29,000 grains of rice in a pound.

29,000 / 4,800 = 6.04 hours to produce a 1 pound bag of rice

I can buy a 1 pound bag of rice, and have it shipped to my front door, for $7.80
$6.40 of which is for shipping.

7.80 / 6.04 = $1.29 an hour

Now where I live, even at Burger King I could make at least $7.00 an hour.

7.00 / 1.29 = 5.42 times as much by working at Burger King.

Now let's go back to that $6.40 for shipping a one pound bag of rice to my front door now knowing I can produce more than 5 times as much by working an extremely low paying job.

Of course this number has to be changed because we're trying to feed the hungry (not that I'm not) instead of me.

Surely it wouldn't cost $30 a pound to ship rice from the United States to the hungry.

I think this is more a way to let people know what it's like to get paid like the hungry people than it is a good way to feed them. :)

P.S. -- Now that I think about it, I don't remember a single word out of it all & I looked up a good few of them.

I have posted this on my blog. It is a really great way to help other people who are hungry from all over the world. Besides it is also a great tool to advance you in learning your vocabulary... Giving to charity has never been so much fun and educational...

thanks for playing, one and all :D

I guess it's not the most effective way, but it sure is easy - just by killing a bit of office time you get to do something nice for someone.....
