http://www.alexa.com shows traffic ranking. And this can translate into how many visitors they have.

In my experience, I have found visitors make about 1 cent per visitor. For every 1000 visitors a day to a site I haev, I can make about $10 a day from those visitors. Less than that I need to evaualte my ads. More than that is a correction that will be balanced out on low days. On average, it seems to be about 1 cent per visitor.

Does anyone else have similar / opposing experiences?

There is no way of finding out the profitability of rivals unless they publish figures. Alexa provides what it estimates is the URL value... take this with a pinch of salt. Like I said above, if you want to know what they are making through ads, e-commerce etc is impossible unless they publish figures.

Then approach the website and ask them.

If you are really are a venture capitalist then you should know that this data is confidential unless they are a public limited company, in which case it will be released in an annual report. The majority of web sites are not plc's and thus only have to disclose this information to the tax man..
