1. Tell us how you came across OZZU.

I am not entirely certain. I recall doing a web search for common problems associated with IT – in order to come up with the ‘next big thing’. Probably one of the threads caught my interest, and I thought to myself "what a dandy way to 'give back'".

2. Tell us about the town you live in.

Hmm. I live in Cary, NC. A town that pre-existed the "Yankee invasion", but has not survived it intact. There's more of us here now, than Southern-folk, which explains the new acronym so designed by said folk; Controlled Area for Relocated Yankees. All in all, NC is nice. Change of seasons, but no extremes. The pace might be slow, but not the growth. We have mountains to one side and the beach to the other.

3. So you're a big cigar fan, are Cuban cigars reeeeally that special?

In a word, yes. I could wax rhapsodic about the qualities of product grown in the Vuelta Abajo but I won't. Does that mean all Cubans are better than all non-cubans? No. My favorite cigar is the Padron 1926, 40th Anniversary -- completely a Nicaraguan puro.

4. What first got you into computers?

I was a 'closet geek' for many years, though I recall my fascination with them early on while watching Carl Sagan talk about mapping space using quantum mechanics on a computer ... I was hooked. Played with an Altair and graduated to a Vic-20. Not long after, a friend (who was less a 'closet' type than myself) showed me BBS'ing. The thought of telecommunications enthralled me. I was done.

5. Tell us about a typical workday in the life of mr daemonguy.

There's no such thing as typical, really. Once day I might be working on the design for a high availability offering for some Fortune 100 company, the next I am pulled off for an emergency benefit design (a la, Hurricane Katrina, tsunami victim relief, etc.).
Some days I sit in my office and compose responses to queries I wish had never been forthcoming (as I am sure I will be doing tomorrow). :)

6. You recently got married, tell us how you met your better half.

She's the best. She's strong, intelligent, sexy ... though in my estimation, a strong showing in the former two categories greatly enhances the lastter. She works as an Interior Designer and posseses an inherent knack for it. She's an accomplished painter, preferring watercolor or acrylic and has begun work to make our kitchen very Tuscan using Trompe d'oil techniques.

7. I heard that now you're a 'homebody' but before you never really stuck around one location too long. Enlighten us about your travels.

Whew. Well, practically you name it and I have been there. (OK, not exactly. :)) Where have I actually resided (held residence)? Italy, Germany, Netherlands. Where I have been on a more temporary basis? Almost all of Europe (do they still call it 'Eastern' and 'Western'? :)), the continent of Africa, the Middle East and most recently, Australia.

8. Do you have a personal site/blog?

Not any more/No.

9. Who is your hero?

The easy answer is my father. He's the one who instilled in me a sense of purpose with a drive to accomplish it.
Though, to a lesser degree I have known quite a few people I would label my personal heroes.

10. Finish this sentence "My life's motto is..."
The was a time in my life when it would have been "Nemo me impune lacessit".
Perhaps now I have mellowed to "Duc, sequere, aut de via decede".

11. Name your top 5 pet peeves.

Just 5?
1. Slow drivers in the left lane.
2. Slow drivers in the right lane.
3. People who speak sanctimoniously about events and/or circumstances they have no possibility of understanding, never having been immersed in same.
4. Wild assumptions based upon #3 that are derived from their foundation more in party-line political rhetoric than actual truth.
5. Ignorance, aside from that found in #3 and #4 above. I am not talking about people who have never had the opportunity to learn, instead those that do not take up the gauntlet when proffered.
6. GTKY threads.

12. What are some of your favorite movies/books?
Movies:
Lord of the Rings -- all 3
Army of Darkness
Casablanca
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Usual Suspects
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
To name a few.

Books:
Quantum Reality
The Book of Five Rings
Leadership Secrets of Atilla the Hun
Ninpo: Wisdom for Life
Tao te Ching
TCP/IP Illustrated -- all three volumes

13. What is currently in the trunk of your car?

Jimmy Hoffa.
Seriously though, a blanket, first aid kit, jacket and water.
At the moment, my Sigsauer Might be in there as well.

14. Could you go a week without a computer and/or internet access?

Ack! I don't even want to consider the possibility. :)

15. What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?

Most? That I am able to mention ... I guess my BSEE.
Well, maybe not. Actually it might be my involvement with 'Nodes on Demand' for my company, or Open Invention Network. Hmm.

Nah, the trump card. My wife has a son, and he now calls me 'Dad'. The fact that he wants to of his own accord, I consider my greatest accomplishment.

16. Spam us. List 3 sites you frequent as much as ozzu and tell us why they are so special.

Well, one is my bloglines page of RSS feeds. (Have to stay on top of things somehow.)
According to my stats, my most regularly visited web site is an internal one for my company -- so I can't very well give that out. (It's a visual monitor of our thousands of devices/systems and the applications/operating systems that run on them.) :)
OK, one self-serving link.
http://www.freebsd.org

OK, two.
http://www.ibm.com

Oh hey! http://www.australianopen.com -- coming soon! ;)
:)

17. Would you rather be born with a refrigerator on your back, or have an elephant as a close, personal friend? Explain.

Er. Hmm. Logically, being 'born' with a refrigerator on one's back would A) terminate the mother (for obvious reasons) and B) most likely crush the infant under the weight. With an average size of 22.5 cubic feet and a weight of 285 lbs an infant stands little chance of survival.
Having an elephant as a friend is a 'win-win' scenario. Bullies are never a problem, and there's always something to talk about at parties -- quite literally, the elephant in the room.

I choose the latter.

18. Favorite day of the week?

Wednesday; cigar night at my local tobacconist. ;)

19. Any useless talents?

Hmm. Useless. Define the term as it is used in this context.

20. What are some of your hobbies?

I have a wife and an 11 year old now ... who has time for hobbies?

21. Fave type of food?

Sushi.

22. Are you a morning person or night owl?

It greatly depends on the circumstance. I have not slept well (more than an hour or two a night) since 1990, so I'm fairly flexible with both.

23. Tell us about your very first part time job.

I bagged groceries at a local store for minimum wage in order to afford my own insurance and gas.

24. Are you a task oriented person or a people oriented person?

Task, but I sometimes masquerade as a 'people-person' if it works to my advantage. :)

25. Does a merry-go-round turn clockwise or counterclockwise?

Clockwise. Unless of course the folks down-under think they should roll it the reverse and do so for purely philosophical reasons. :) Far be it from me to tell them how to merry-go-round.

26. What's your zodiac sign?

Aquarius.

27. Who is the next GTKY victim?

At the moment, I am leaning towards 613 (for starting this damn thing on me).

28. Do you watch TV? If so, do you have a favourite show?

I would have to say, Extreme Makeover, Home Edition. It's nice to see people go above and beyond purely for the benefit of another.

29. Why were you so adamant to avoid a GTKY thread?

Despite the opinion of some individuals that my vehement opposition to the GTKY was a cry for acknowledgement or some such, it wasn't. My life is not altogether exciting at this point, and I really won't discuss it as it was, when it was.

30. What is it like working for "Big Blue"? Do you enjoy your work?

I love it. I never thought I would, but I honestly do. We're encouraged to think radically, to innovate and bend technology to our whims. This is not the stuffy, white-collar, starched-shirt environment that some might associate with the corporation; this is an open, evolving entity. Yes, they want profits; yes they act accordingly -- so what? Higher profits equate to better salaries and bonuses and perhaps that enables me to send my kid to a better school and wear finer clothes.

31. If you could have any other job in the world, what would it be?

Directorate of Operations, Central Intelligence Agency

32. What was the last book you read? Did you enjoy it?

Fiction? DaVinci Code. Yes, actually I did.

33. Desktop or Laptop?

Yes.

34. Intel or AMD?

Whichever gets the job done. You forgot a few, Power architecture, Sparc and let's not forget the new cell. ;)

35. Sweet or Salted (popcorn)?

Salted.

36. I've noticed that you are quite eloquent with the English language - did you do well in English at school?

That's very kind of you, thanks. I performed as one might expect. :) As an addendum, I have learned over time to relax those constraints else I sound like a pompous ass. (Perhaps I am too late?)

37. What was your favourite subject at school?

Physics

38. Why Unix rather than Linux?

It's pure; well, more so than its cousin.
It's not a unix-like kernel surrounded by packages.
The mascot is cooler.
The development philosophy (core development team with contributors) vs. that of Linux (single kernel hacker with everyone running willy-nilly over the rest of the code) provides a more stable operating environment.
In the end, it really doesn’t matter what I think … it matters what the end user or the client believes. There’s a reason why we use only Enterprise class Linux at work; stability due in large part to core development – sound familiar?

39. Why FreeBSD over say NetBSD or Solaris?

FreeBSD differs from NetBSD in philosophy; NetBSD runs on anything, FreeBSD runs on most things ... and does a lot more.
Solaris is trash, which should have been dropped years ago in favor of a BSD port to sparc. Should Sun have had the mind to accept the FBSD port to the USparc chipset, they would be in better shape at this juncture.
Instead they flip-flop back and forth; BSD to ATT (SYSV) to BSD, who can keep up?

40. Favourite time of the day?

You know, I never expected to even be alive much less married at this point in my life, therefore every time of day is my favorite.

41. Coke or Pepsi?

Neither. Single malt scotch, older than 12 years minimum -- neat. I am not much of a soda person.

42. Do you need coffee to start your day?

Define "need"? :)

43. Which of the UserFriendly guys do you most associate with and why (only if you read it of course)?

Pitr … “ni pa Ruski?”
We both have a 'past', and we're both just a tad devious.

44. Ask yourself a question here.

Q: "Why am I answering these damn questions?"
A: ATNO said I had to.

45. Why did you ask yourself the above question?

Self-explanatory.

46. Favourite forum smiley?

:) Mostly because I just am used to a colon and parenthesis -- old timer.

47. Do you have any pets?

Yep, dogs. Two Boston Terriers to be exact (Sam and Frodo, yes THAT Sam and Frodo).

48. List 3 adjectives that best describe you

Pensive, evasive, and at times, loquacious.

49. Cats or Dogs?

See #47

50. What do you like to do when no one is looking? If it can be telled Very Happy

I always assume they are looking.

51. If you had all the money in the world, what would you do/buy?

Presumably, with all the money in the world, there nothing left to buy. Not only that, if I truly had ALL the money, money itself would become useless as society would find new methods of bartering for goods and/or services.

52. If you can be admin for one day at Ozzu, what would you do first or who would you ban first? *lol

Either Flavah for getting this started, or Katana for nominating me.

53. We know you are a big tennis fan, tell us somthing about it.

I am not a big tennis fan. I have learned to appreciate the athleticism it takes to play but would still not consider myself a 'fan', per se. I do events for work; it's all ones and zeros to me.

54. if you could have one thing in the world what would it be?

My youth.

55. if you could be invisible for one day what would you do?

You are presuming I never was. ;)

56. if you could be one of the fantastic four what one would you be and why?

None; too showy. I am more of a 'behind-the-scenes' kind of guy.

57. what kind of milk do you like?(2% whole....)

Skim

58. do you use AXE deodorant/bodywash?

Uh, no.

58 B. if so what AXE sent is your fav?

Which "axe sent" is my fav? The one that doesn't cleave me in twain. :) I have not yet inhaled the fragrant aphrodisiac that is 'Axe'(TM), in any of its many forms ... I am saddened to report.

59. fly to outer space or swim to the deeps?

Outer space

60. worlds best _____.

I am not really sure how to answer this beckoning statement.

61. chicken or beef?

Bison.

62. This question was mainly inspired by quick reading of Cowkillers question 58. What is your favourite accent?

My favorite accent would probably be a French one -- very Peter Sellers (a la 'Pink Panther'). For cooking my favorite accent is rosemary.

63. In the UK we call the "Axe" deodorant/bodywash "Lynx". If the USA was to decide to follow in the UK's footsteps and call the deo
dorant/bodywash "Lynx", what would your initial thoughts be, and why?

I would at least purchase it to wear while downloading the web via my text-based browser; I love being jocose.

64. Do you have any special plans/achievements you wish to fulfill in 2006?

I am up for promotion this year, with a bit of good fortune I should get it.

65. If someone gave you 100,000USD to get on a motorbike and jump over 10 buses, would you take the risk?

Probably not anymore, I did enough of that sort of thing when I was young.

66. Is there a record in the Guiness book of records you would like to make your own?

Not particularly.

67. What kind of vehicle (if any) do you currently drive?

2002 Honda S2000

68. Which do you use the most? Yahoo or Google?

Google, like any true geek.

69. Where in the world would you like to retire to?

I have no idea.

70. Have you ever considered mountain climbing?

Been there, done that.

71. How would you name you first born if it is a boy or a girl? Daemonboy perhaps?

I will probably not procreate; a fact which I am sure elates many. :)
Though, in the spirit of the question I will answer it as asked.
No, not Daemonboy -- he'll have to come to enlightenment on his own. :)

72. How do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?

"How"? Good question ... you know of a method to see into the future? :) I imagine I will still be with the same company, though a different aspect of the work.

73. Are you into any kind of sport?

Good old American football.

74. We know you were in the military or were related to, tell us about it. Was you in Desert Storm?

I was, in a manner of speaking. I really can't go into it much, but I was there.

75. Tell us one thing about yourself or your family that would surprise us

Well, you might say I used to be in the intelligence field.

76. Do you think we would stop asking questions some day? *lol

God I hope so.

77. Tell us about a typical day for Mr and Mrs Daemon now that you are married.

No real change. I work, she works, and we steal moments together at every opportunity, if you know what I mean. :)

78. If you could meet one person from Ozzu who would it be and why?

Now that is a tough one, but I think I have an answer to (the intended question) #51. I would use some measure of the newly acquired funds to sponsor a 'conference' of all the moderators. Somewhere nice of course, say perhaps St. Kitts?

79. Do you have any special or unusual talent we don't know already?

Wasn't this asked already? #19? That was "useless talent". Judges?

80. Have you ever been too drunk to stay awake?

Does the pink elephant fly?

81. Why did the chicken cross the road, anyway?

Wait, is this some cleverly disguised innuendo?
If not, then I will go with the Albert Einstein answer:
"Whether the chicken crossed the road or the road crossed the chicken depends upon your frame of reference."

82. What is the funniest thing that ever happened to you?

You mean besides this, cause it's a real hoot.

83. Do you have any guilty pleasures and bad habits, besides cuban cigars and scotch?

Not anymore, and it is *premium* cigars and *single-malt* scotch. :) Though, I do enjoy a fine wine from time to time. I would hardly classify that as a 'guilty pleasure' or 'bad habit'. :)

84. Do you sing in the shower? Laughing

Uh, no ... for the benefit of all mankind, no.

85. Do you know any words in spanish?

Si. I also know Italian, Si. ;)

My Spanish is awful. My Italian was fluent at one time as was my German and Japanese. My Russian was passable at best. I knew only a few phrases in Arabic.
I have since effectively lost it all. It's true, that if you don't use it, you lose it.

86. Tell us about you most intense or profound experience.

Besides getting married? :)

Most of my 'intense' experiences are nothing I am able to relate here, though I will say that my very recent trip with my aging father to a NY Giants game, 4-day weekend with just he and I was very profound. It had a lot more impact on me than I first imagined it would.

87. What do you consider your best strength? and you biggest weakness?

Strength: Ability to make tough decisions very rapidly; think on my feet and always look for multiple exit strategies/options.
Weakness: Same.

Isn't that better; we all know a little more about one of Ozzu's most elusive mods.

90. Following from your favourite books, have you ever studied Bushido or Ninpo? Do you own a katana/daisho?

91. Fancy trading your S2000 for a Civic Sport?

92. What's the fastest speed you've achieved in your S2000?

93. If you had to look like one of the Ozzu smilies for the rest of your life, which one would it be?

My comments to your answers :P

Cigars  do you smoke the little ones or the big fatty ones?

That is SO cute about your step son calling you Dad

44. Ask yourself a question here.

Q: "Why am I answering these damn questions?"
A: ATNO said I had to.

63. In the UK we call the "Axe" deodorant/bodywash "Lynx". If the USA was to decide to follow in the UK's footsteps and call the deo
dorant/bodywash "Lynx", what would your initial thoughts be, and why?

I saw Axe spray smellies in some other country (forget which) me and Jerrek had a good ole laugh and was gonna buy it and send to Axe. Lucky we didn't! Didn't know it was Lynx's US version. Doh!

Great answers! I'm glad I got mine over and done with when there was only 10 questions

"All done up"? You mean 'riced out'? Uh, no. While I love this car, someday I will want to trade it in for a new one. Highly modified cars, despite popular belief to the contrary, do not increase the value. In fact the opposite is true.

90. Following from your favourite books, have you ever studied Bushido or Ninpo? Do you own a katana/daisho?

I have. I studied ninjutsu for many years and as such, Ninpo. I own several ninja-to, as well as kusari fundi, bisen-to, kusari-gama, etc. et al.

91. Fancy trading your S2000 for a Civic Sport?

Hmm, no. :)

92. What's the fastest speed you've achieved in your S2000?

~140 MPH. which is roughly ~225.3 KPH.

93. If you had to look like one of the Ozzu smilies for the rest of your life, which one would it be?

I don't know, as I rarely use them. But having just looked at them (and I am guessing you mean the vast array of emoticons?) I guess it's a toss up:
:drinking:
As long as we replace the beer with scotch.

and

:rainbowafro:

Because who can ignore the multicolored afro that screams 1970's?

Generally speaking I prefer the larger ones. More complex, due to increased capacity for blending. Though when time is short, I do enjoy a quality petit corona or lonsdale. ;)

Speaking of Lynx, for those of you who might not have understood my answer ... Lynx is a text-based web browser.

94. What kyu/dan did you achieve in Ninjutsu?

Let's say I am(was) in the 'heaven' level of dan. ;)

95. What dojo were you a part of (Bujinkan etc)?

The original Bujinkan studying the 9 ryu.

96. Did you ever get the opportunity to train in Japan and/or meet Soke Hatsumi?

I have never trained in Japan, though I did meet the Soke at a Tai-Kai.

97. What's the worst injury you sustained whilst training?

My ego was bruised. :) We were doing climbing exercises at night, and the webbing on my shuko came undone as I was about 40 ft. up a tree. Wham! Down I came, though thankfully was not injured (I attribute that to previous training on 'how to fall' :) ).

I was embarrassed though. :)
