Anyone read about this yet?

ICANN have this afternoon approved genetic Top Level Domains. Basically what this means is you will be able to create a unique set of letters to be added at the end of your domain name.

I knew ICANN have been debating it for quite a while now but I had no idea how close they were to actually approving it.

Looks like the adult industry may finally get the .xxx TLD they've been vying for for so long.

I wonder if you'd be allowed to use .exe and the extension names to many windows files?

Or rather than doing .com you could have http://www.example.php

ICANN isn't going to let the general public register those right? Or is it going to be like; go to godaddy type in blah.tld and if its available you get it?

nm, read a little further and saw the six figure number

Won't be that easy. You're also going to have to cough up quite a bit of cash for a TLD as well: upwards of $10,000+ USD.

Ha ! Keep dreaming folks ! :D

Quote:
Registering a new top-level domain would cost somewhere between $100,000 and $500,000, so it won’t be the sort of thing that individuals do. The price tag should also fend off a high-stakes version of “domain squatting” – the practice of registering popular Web-site names and then trying to sell them at a profit.

Not to mention you're required to maintain the hosting infastructure for the TLD.

I don't doubt there will be a .xxx TLD soon enough though.
