It's quite amazing that. When he was falling it appeared as though he was above water for the most part. I'm guessing the lift brought him towards land, unless he deliberately navigated to the land?

That is amazing! Not the fact that that happened, but the fact that he survived. He was lucky that those thicket of blackberry bushes were at the exact spot that he would land that saved his life.
